We can't put more than $20 in the tank before it starts to over flow, with the gas gauge on empty when we start pumping. Then the gauge reads 3/4 tank. When it runs down to half it jumps straight down to empty

Your fuel pump assembly located inside the gas tank has a float that measures how much gasoline is in the tank. False readings means the fuel pump assembly needs to be replaced.

SOURCE: gas gauge reads empty but tank acts like it's full

I also have a 04 with a 1.8L. same problem. I took the fuel regulator off. It is a black box behind the rear tire under car. It only has 2 bolts to take off. After that there is a couple of vent hoses from the tank going to this box. Unplug them and 1 electrical connection. The electrical connection and one vent is connected to a T connection on the box that you can unplug by twisting on the T. Take that T off and look inside where you unplugged the hose on this T. There is a spring and a little plunger inside this tube. The plunger gets stuck. I took a little screw driver and some PB blaster and worked that plunger back and forth a couple dozen times and it unfroze. Put it back together gassed up just fine. I did not look but I was told regulator can be replaced for 200$. But a can of blaster is cheaper.

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Suburban: Fuel gauge reads empty, tank is half full

Youre gauge is controlled by a plunger in the fuel tank which is attached to the sensor and the fuel gauge. it sounds like when the plunger goes down half way its either getting stuck down lower then it should. Needs replacing. Any mechanic can do this install for you.

SOURCE: 2001 chevy silverado 4.8 gas gauge not working properly

Fairly common problem with GM vehicles. The sending unit in your tank has a small circuit board that an arm is attached to which moves up and down according to your fuel level. This circuit board and arm are not making good contact. Unfortunately the only good solution is to replace this part.

Testimonial: "thought probably that was it but better off replacing whole unit .i was for for gauge proplem thanks. "

Wont start

Sounds like a wiring problem at the gas tank.
I would check for voltage and ground for the fuel pump and the sending unit for the gauge.

My car is full of gas yet the gauge keeps going up and down. One minute it shows it's full and then it drops down to the empty and the orange light starts dinging and it reads empty. In a 20 mile drive it...

I would start by having someone replace the sender unit in the fuel tank. This is simply a float in the gas tank which rides on the top of the gas and is connected to a variable resistor. As the gas is consumed, the float sinks moving the variable resistor and that sends a signal to the gas gauge reflecting the lower fuel level in the tank.

It is not uncommon for the floats to develop a leak, and/or to fail completely. It is not going to be cheap to remove the tank and replace the sender, so consider having the fuel pump replaced at the same time so as to avoid paying that labor cost again. The fuel pump is right next to the sender.

Have a 2001 gmc jimmy...drove home gas gauge read 1/4 tank..next day cranked over but wont start..gas gauge reads empty...put $10.00 from spare gas can..cranked over but no start ..gas gauge still reads...

chevy and gmc trucks have an on going problem with this, turn the key on,and get a rubber mallot or a hammer and hit the bottom of the fuel tank a couple of times, this will unstick something in the fuel pump/sending unit.

Gas gauge is not reading correctly. Shows a full

the problem is caused by a defective gas gauge sending unit, this part is located inside the gas tank, you must remove the gas tank to replace it.

We just got a 1988 Porsche and filled with 1/2 tank, there was what seemed like overflow happening - Any idea what may be the problem.

fuel tank vent could be blocked by mud/pebbles etc, not letting the gas fumes escape while your adding fuel making it overflow, check underneath the car near the fuel tank .. something to start with..

2005 Nissan Xterra gas gauge reads empty when full of gas.

Sending unit died. can be expencive to replace since most sending units are integral with the fuel pump now. lots of labor too. Better to use the trip odometer till you can afford a day without your car and a $600.00 +labor repair bill.
