SOURCE: air compressor fills, but slows down as the pressure builds

sounds like you need a new check valve which should be somewhere between the compressor outlet piping, tubing, etc and the tank which prevents the air in tank to back feed to the compressor which would cause hard starting and could damage the motor easy way to check is when you shut off the compressor with some air in the tank if the check valve is bad it would continue to bleed air out out the unloader valve .the unloader valve on your unit is most likely part of the pressure switch when the unit shuts of it should only bleed down the pressure in the pump so it would make it easy to start when needed hope i didn't confuse you

SOURCE: Mastercraft 2.0 hp air compressor will not build up over 25 psi

sounds like a bad or broken valves in the head. crankcase needs a vent which is sometimes a small hole drilled into the oil fill plug and will normally blow some air out the vent while it runs

Check that the fuel tank is not creating a vacuum. this will starve the engine. After it shuts down the vacuum dissipates and lets the fuel run into the carb again.

Model ihave a dewalt 2 gal air compresssor model# d55141,compressor keeps runing and pressure builds above 150 p.s.i.doesnt shut off

There is a pressure regulator that is contained in the same housing as the on off switch. Take the housing cover off and see if there is a problem with the mechanics on the switch or the seal is bad.

My compressor keeps slowly building air after it has reached cut out pressure of 170 , keeps building till it reaches 200 and high pressure valve opens ....

It is not opening the bypass valve all the way see if there is a adjustment so that it pushes the valve open farther when it slows down.

I have an upright craftsman compressor which is VERY slow at building pressure. The shut off is 150psi. When I use the unit, and it turns on, it runs forever to build back up, even when im not using it....

Your unit should fill within 5 min. Compressor may have worn cylinder (assuming oil-less) , worn valves or just leaking. Easy test. Spray soapy water on all connections/fittings including drain valve and regulator while compressor is running. Repair as needed. If no leaks, remove plug from outlet, remove cover and examine cylinder. Turn crank by hand till piston is all the way up into cylinder. Examine carefully the condition of the cylinder close to top. If the cylinder is scratched or worn then pressure is leaking between piston/cylinder and will not fill tank properly. Replacement cylinder kit available at Sears, cost under $50. If no leaks and the cylinder looks good, then valve plate may have broken gasket or reed valves. Replace as needed. Good luck with your project.

The motor runs continuously and the pressure is low. What are the possible causes for this?

You haven't given any model number information, but typically on any air compressor if it won't build pressure, either you have a leak in your piping, tank, hose or the compressor cannot move the required cfm of air. Could be a valve problem or piston, relief valve? Do you hear any air leaking. There are som many different models from cheap throw away compressors to thousands of dollar models. HArd to say without more information

Lee,
I'll email you the breakdown. The pump is probably actually a 3Z180, made for Speedaire by Champion. If you are looking for the assembly sticking out of the back of the pump, it is probably the centrifugal unloader, which vents the pressure after the compressor shuts down. You can get the parts from Grainger parts (888-361-8649), or your local Champion compressor distributor.

Intermittent pressure building

The check valve is easy to test. All that you have to do is run the compressor till you have some pressure in the tank, 50 ~ 60 lbs will do, then remove the air discharge tube at the check valve installed in the tank (the brass valve). Spray soapy water into the valve. Tiny leak is ok, rapid leak replace valve with generic valve from www.grainger.com . Most likely problem is worn cylinder or reed valves in the head. To check cylinder, unplug unit and (oilfree compressor) remove cover to expose the crank. Push the piston all the way up and check for scratches on the upper part of cylinder. If scratched, replace with kit# K-0650 available at www.toolpartsdirect.com. If cylinder is smooth all the way up then problem should be the reedvalve plate in the head. The reeds could be held open with debris or broken. Clean or replace as needed. Good Luck and email if you have questions about the repair. (Oil in crankcase type compressor will not have cylinder problems)
