take the wire that goes to the coil off and try it if you have spark with the wire off the problem is with a safety switch or wiring

John Deer D140 surging

The typical cause for "governor hunt" is a fouled carburetor. Could also be water in fuel.

Suggest you drain fuel, especially the carburetor fuel bowl, and put in fresh fuel. A fuel system additive such as Sea Foam will likelyl clear minor carburetor fouling.

Measure and add fuel additive per instruction... too much additive will cause high specific gravity and improper air/fuel mixture (poor running or no run).

The belts have automatic adjustment. If is the deck belt make sure the tensioner arm is free and not stuck. The transmission drive belt is also automatic adjusting.

there is a small handle on the back of most riders allowing you to free wheel the machine. If you can push your machine freely now then push the handle in and it should drive
