SOURCE: Western Digital hard drive problem
Ok. I have a WD 500 and I have ran into similar problems. First, shut your computer down. Unplug the hard drives USB cable and the power cable. Wait for about 2 minutes. Plug the USB cable into the computer, plug the power cord in...wait for 30-45 seconds and then start your computer. That hopefully should solve your issues.

Check in your BIOS settings that SATA drives can be seen as "ATA"
Install Linux, and then , after everithing went OK, change BIOS to SATA again.

Take it our of the external encasing and plug it in directly to your motherboard. This has worked for me in the past. I just had my second wd external harddrive crash so now I will do the same process all over again.
