You have tried all the usual resets?
Turn the NOOK off completely.
Hold the Power button and Home (n) buttons. The device will turn on. Continue to hold both buttons until the device shuts off once again (~15-20 seconds).
Turn the device on normally. It will prompt for a factory reset. Press the Home button twice to confirm.

However that said, it sounds like you have a hardware fault, maybe screen connector or screen itself. Not really economically repairable in my opinion

Evenly spaced vertical lines

Hello
Check the smoothing capacitor to video output supply voltage, usually derived from any one winding of the LOT. It will come around 10uF350VDC to 47uF 350VDC range. If this capacitor is faulty, or gone less in capacitance with time, this type of fault will occur. Check the green volour output transistor on the video output card, can be located attached to the neck of the picture tube; for any loose soldering or leakage. OK.

27'' lxi reduced picture

This is a problem with the vertical circuit and can be as simple as poor solder connections within that circuit or defective parts. If you have no experience with soldering or TVs, this should go to a service shop. Expect a parts cost in the $30-$40 range for and IC +/or capacitors. If you'd like to attempt this yourself, please supply the exact make and model so I can post the parts required along with additional instructions. Please note that TVs contain potentially dangerous high voltages even when unplugged.

Thanks,
Dan
