SOURCE: placement of water in the roaster

Hi Joan,

To prepare a turkey, I first spray the liner and grate with Pam. Then prepare your turkey as usual. I do not salt the turkey as I found out the hard way that it make the juices too salty. Instead, I stuff, then butter the outside of my turkey. You should have the liner inside the roaster, with the grate on top. Put your turkey on the grate, add a can of chicken broth. Cook per instructions. I have found out that the tukey will be done quicker then it states in the instructions. If this happens, just keep the turkey warm in the roaster. Good luck.

SOURCE: do you put water between the pan and the roaster?

My wife and I add fluids based on the food being cooked. A roast might get a little wine or other spirits added for flavoring. Same for poultry. The addition of fluids needs to be adjusted for what your placing in the pot, some veggies (especially frozen) will add moisture to the pan. The initial amount of liquid in the pan should be about a cup to help prevent the meat from sticking to the pan and to facilitate gravy.
As the heat is mainly applied to the sides of the device bottom burning should not be a problem. We have made stews, soups, and roasted meats for our main dishes in our cooker. I hope you have plenty of hearty meals with your cooker.

How to cook pork chops

Yum, I love Pork Chops and Taters. I use a skillet and a little olive oil. Heat the pan til oil is pretty hot, you want to sear the pork chops when they hit the pan for about 2 minutes on each side. Then reduce heat to a simmer, add about a 1/4 inch of liquid to the pan. (I use water) Simmer until cooked. Do not overcook as they can become very dry quickly. That's why I add the water and turn the burner to low.

Also, I make this at least once a month;
Cut chops into 3 to 4" strips
Peel a few potatoes, diced (white preferred)
Put olive oil in skillet (get hot)
Add potatoes, searing the outside
Add pork strips, sear for 2 minutes on each side or to desired brownness.
Reduce heat to simmer
Add water to cover the bottom of the pan
Cover
Let them cook slowly while you watch your favorite show or mix up a salad!

These are so tender and juicy!
Enjoy!

Trying to keep large # of hot dogs in buns warm. Do I put water in the roaster before adding the insert containing the hot dogs?

The Owner's Guide for the Rival 18qt Roaster Oven with Buffet Server is available here:

http://www.rivalproducts.com/manuals/MANUALS/RO180BR-C_43_18972586.PDF

See Page 6 for full instructions on use as a buffet server.

You would normally fill the removable roasting pan with 5 to 6 quarts of water ot 1/2 - 3.4 full. Place in the buffet server frame and the empty serving dishes and then preheat at 350 degrees until hot.

Place hot, cooked food in the serving dishes and reduce heat to 250 degree to keep food warm. Adjust the temperature and add more hot water as necessary.

How do I cook a smoked ham in my rival elect. oven

Smithfield type country ham? Use the insert to soak it (I do two days in the fridge in skim milk made from nonfat dry milk), drain, add water and simmer in the roaster:

  • Bring water to 180 degrees (not quite simmering). Cook to 160 degrees internal temperature (or about 25 minutes per pound). Add water to keep ham covered.
  • Take ham from the pan and while warm, remove the skin carefully without tearing the fat. Dot the surface with cloves if desired, then sprinkle with brown sugar and bread crumbs
  • Drain roaster
  • Bake 15 minutes at 400 degrees (or long enough to brown nicely).
  • This makes the ham tender and not as salty as straight roasting.

Do you need to add water in the bottom pan to use a roaster as a buffet server?

Not just no but absolutely no. This is an oven, not a steam table, and water between the roaster and the roaster cook pan actually interferes with the heat transfer, as well as building dangerous steam.

Water between insert and roasting pan in Nesco electric roaster?

Putting water BETWEEN THE BASE AND THE REMOVABLE PAN *is like putting water in your crock pot before inserting the porcelain dish and lid. This is dangerous and will destroy the unit. Those who answered "Yes" do not realize that the ? relates to putting water in the electric heating element portion of the pan... DANGEROUS!
