If you need to replace the printer, i would suggest to buy compatible toner, you will save some money doing this. the technology for compatible toner has improved greatly in recent years, you should have no problem using it. i usually buy my ink toner from this website:
Brother Toners Inks Cartridges or
Amazon com Online Shopping for Electronics Apparel Computers Books DVDs... if they have something with prime. Watch this video
it might help you print with empty cartridge :)
No, if one of the cartridges runs out of ink the printer will not let you continue. It is a common complaint with this model. However, I have had great success with refilling the cartridges.
The printer apparently keeps track of number of pages printed instead of whether the toner is actually low. Here's a reset that I found on Amazon:
1. Open the front cover that gives you access to the toners.
2. Press and hold "Secure Print" and "Cancel" at the same time. You will see "K-TNR-STD" display on the screen.
3. Using the "+" and "-" buttons select the toner you want to reset.
4. Press the "Ok" button.
5. It will display "Ok?" and hit the "Ok" button again to reset the toner.
6. Close the lid.
Hope this helps.

For help installing a cartridge, go to How to install the print
cartridge.
Follow these instructions when the ink level is low.
Note When the ink level for the print cartridge is low, a message appears on
your computer screen. You can also check the ink levels by using the software
installed with the HP All-in-One.
When you receive a low-ink warning message, make sure you have a replacement
print cartridge available. You should also replace the print cartridges when you see
faded text or if you experience print quality issues related to the print cartridges.
To order print cartridges for the HP All-in-One, go to www.hp.com/learn/suresupply. If
prompted, choose your country/region, follow the prompts to select your product, and
then click one of the shopping links on the page.

To replace the print cartridges
1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on.
Caution If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door

cartridges are not docked safely on the right side when you try to remove
them.
2. Open the print cartridge door.
The print carriage moves to the center of the HP All-in-One.
3. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a
print cartridge to release it.
If you are replacing the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the
slot on the left.
If you are replacing the black or photo print cartridge, remove the print cartridge
from the slot on the right.
