If it is the same model I just purchased, to engage the parking break you simply push both handles out to the side. That's the only way I know to engage it.

On my Cub Cadet RZT and my Troy Built RZT Mustang you have to turn off the Parking Brake before you can move the handles or the PTO button, also the parking brake has to be on before the starter will turn the mower engine over. Real Brain teaser at times
Moist likely you failed to reinstall PTO clutch correctly as it sound the anti-rotation device wasn't installed. When you started the engine it would spun pulling the wiring apart. Hopefully just connector came part; otherwise, you might need to purchase a new PTO clutch assembly.
There are safety interlocks on zero turn mowers. These prevent starting unless you have:
1. the handles in 'neutral' position
2. the brake on
3. the mower engagement (PTO) switch off
4. yourself in the seat.
Chances are one of these conditions hasn't been met. Since you were reversing when it happened, perhaps you haven't got the handles back to neutral position?
Your machine has a warranty on it and in many cases if you attempt any unauthorized repairs, it will void your warranty. My best advice it to first contact your dealer or an authorized service center regarding the problem and what you can do yourself without voiding the warranty
