My washer will fill but when it is time to drain after agitation the timer sticks and just hums.

MOST PROBABLE REASONS FOR A BUZZING SOUND IN WASHING MACHINE:

1. Blocked Drain Pump: An object has lodged itself inside of the drain pump. There can be items such as a small sock, a coin, a toothpick, or something small in your clothes pockets when you wash them. These items can fall out of the pockets and end up in the drain pump causing it to become blocked and make the buzzing noise you hear. Here is an audio recording of a blocked drain pump. Based on your details, I would first check the drain pump to see if it's locked up due to a piece of clothing stuck inside the pump. You can remove the pump from the motor leaving the two hoses attached and then see if the motor will start. If it continues to just hum instead of starting, then it may be losing the start voltage. The motor needs start voltage and run voltage in order to start. The motor will just hum if it's not getting the start voltage.  The start voltage circuit is usually the red and yellow wires. Check the yellow and red wires at the motor, capacitor and at the timer for a loose connection. Make sure the red and yellow wires are pushed in all the way at the timer terminal quick disconnect plug. 120 volts should be present when measuring across the red and yellow wires. Check the white wire with the black stripe too at the timer and motor.

As with most appliances and cars wiring harness are made to service many models for economy to the manufacture. One harness may have 50 wires in it but your washer may only use 30 of those wires. A wiring diagram is a must. If it did not come in the paper work that came with the washer you should be able to find it online. The last 2 washes I worked on had away to put them into a self diagnostic mode this may also be in your manuel. In both cases they had a no drain problem as the code stated and gave me a place to start and because of the way washers are made now adays the drain water pump gets clogged after so many seconds of not pumping it will shut the washer down. I guess to keep the motor from burning out. Taking the water pump assembly apart I found a sock yes a sock wrap around the impellers and this was in both washers. check the pump,could have a sock or something stuck in it.usually i would say to check the lid switch,open and close the lid,if you don't hear a clicking sound the washer won't go into spin or drain but if you're hearing a humming sound that's the motor watch this video
http://www.youtube.com/user/RepairClinic?v=DwV71h86Gxw it will show you how to get to the pump.pop off the two clips that hold the pump on and remove the pump just pull it backwards off of the motor shaft,now get a piece of wire and strip the ends on it,2 to 3 inches long,unplug the washer before you start to work on it,get your jumper wire and stick it into the wire harness that connects to the lid switch, don't plug it into the ground plug it into the other two wires not the green wire,i'm pretty sure it's the two outside wires and the green ground is in the middle,plug the washer back in and pull the timer out in the spin cycle,if the motor runs and spins you know something is stuck in the pump or the pump is bad,but just to make sure it's not the lid switch and it is the pump put the pump back on and start the washer again if you hear the humming it's the pump or before you pull the pump jump out the lid switch and see if it spins and drains,if it doesn't then pull the pump so you don't have to stick the bad pump back on the washer,all the lid switch is for is so the washer will not run in the spin with the lid open and some washers won't even agitate if the lid is open by using the jumper wire we are bypassing the lid switch to check the washer while it's apart.hope this helps and if you can let us know how you make out so if someone else reads this with the same problem it will help them out too.

If the washer will not agitate, spin or drain it's a motor problem, capacitor or a broken motor coupler. It's either a loose wire connection on the start circuit or failed contact in the timer. When you say that the motor hums during spin, that would indicate that the motor has run voltage, but it has no start voltage. It needs both start and run voltage in order to get the motor started and running. The start voltage gets the motor started, and once started all it needs is run voltage to keep it running. The only difference between agitate and spin is that the polarity is reversed in order to start the motor in the opposite direction. The reversal of the polarity is controlled by timer contacts 7 and 14.

Most likely it's a timer or loose wire connection.

The pump is clogged. Remove the tub to pump hose and you will find debris in it not letting the pump work. Do this and you will be good to go. Thanks, Rick

It sounds like the controller/timer is bad. If this is an old dial timer type control, can you turn the control and cause the washer to drain? If so, replace the timer control.
If it's an electronic control, then look for a failed sensor as it's very unlikely to be the control.
