Hi there! If the filter is clogged this will cause the vacuum to lose suction and possibly shut-off. Below are instructions to checking and cleaning your filters.

1. Remove the dirt cup. Twist off the dirt cup lid.
2. Remove the filter cartridge from dirt cup.
3. Separate the foam and cartridge filters. Wash foam filter under running. Allow 24 hours to air dry outside the vacuum.
4. Tap the excess dirt out of Hepa filter. Hepa filter may also be washed. Allow 24 hours to air dry.
5. Check the secondary filter by removing the filter cover from base. Rinse the foam filter under running water until it runs clear. Allow 24 hours to air dry.
6. The red baffle tube inside of the dirt cup is apart of the filtration of the vacuum and needs to be cleaned as well. Twist out the baffle tube by turning 1/4 turn clockwise. Remove any hair or debris wrapped around baffle tube. Baffle tube can be rinsed if needed. Allow to dry thoroughly.

If the filters are too dirty they may need to be replaced. With regular maintenance the filters should be replaced about once a year. Follow the links below to order replacement filters for your UH20020.

Primary Filter
Exhaust Foam Filter

Hope this helps!

Our dyson only runs one or two min. And quits it is about 4 years old

Odds are it's overheating and can't breathe. Check for clogs in the wands (they are very thin in diameter). They can also clog in the lower hose and/or the long hose you use for attachments. If all that is clear your filter could be clogged. But it definitely sounds like it's overheating.

I turn on the vacuum and it does nothing but when i put the brushes down is turns on and the brush motor runs.....but the suction motor won't do anything.......help!

You have power so it can't be the switch or power cord. It is most likely the motor or the cord from the switch to the motor that is the problem. Start by checking these areas first.

It could be a clog somewhere, a air leak somewhere and/or clogged filters. Cleaning filters does not necessarily mean they are not clogged. They should still be replaced quite frequently.

The suction motor is not working, just the power head

Please be more detailed? What brand? one or two motors?
If power is working with no suction. could be a clog or bad filter if -
and if it is a bagless unit - there is usually more than one filter - if filter is clogged you will use alot of suction!
9 times out of 10 it is usually a filter or clogged.

No more suction on hose attachment

have you cleaned the foam filter? there should also be a u shaped piece of tubing that connects the attachments to the rest of the machine, sometimes it gets clogged ( quite often, i repair on average 3 dysons a week ) also people tend to loose the tube as well.

Dirt devil purpose for pets vacuum quit working

The motor overheats from the filter being clogged underneath the canister or the canister or both are clogged-without the air flow the motor overheats and shuts off as a precautionary measure.By letting the motor cool off it will start again but will turn off shortly if the filters are not properly cleaned.Hope this helps everyone.

Filterqueen cuts out when warm

You should check the disc filter that is located under the paper cone support. The support is secured with a single screw in the middle at the bottom. This filter is commonly overlooked and when it gets dirty will restrict airflow and cause the motor to overheat. Most motors have a Hi-Limit switch incorporated into the motor to protect against overheating. You should also check the top filter (which is probably foam) and replace if it is clogged.
