My 2003 rover 25 has started using a litre of antifreeze every 2 or 3 days and i've been told it could be the head gasket thats gone is there any truth in this

Head Gasket or intake gasket, is most likely, the coolant
has to go somewhere

Cracked Head or Block or Intake, etc

If your lucky a coolant tube seal or rusted out
part that leaks, water pump leak, any number of places

I would hope you parked it ,now the head gasket
question came up

I would hope the vehicle has been tested for the problem
& your not using it & asking about this & that

You say every few days,I say day one, I stop using it, as
you know there is problem

Keep in mind

Head Gasket Fails -- just saying

Where does that coolant go?

Into the exhaust converter & past the oxygen sensors

There done, ruined,IF you drove it one or two days

So are the spark plugs

If you got hot air pockets from low coolant, well you get
the idea, not good, for the motor or your wallet

thanks for your time teddy b i've inspected the engine and it must be leaking from a pipe seal somewhere as it isnt overheating and there hasnt been any other signs of trouble and it has been like this for 3 months at least

Excess presure in coolant system

head gasket has gone but you havent stated if its a petrol or a diesel ,because the petrol one especially does have a bleed thump screw on the heater pipe at the back of the engine but if bleed and still pressurising then its a new gasket but these engine do suffer from head corrosion in the water ports if no antifreeze used and yours could have water ports that have corroded too large to hold ,its a 405 which is a old car now so it may be cheaper to buy a newer model

Intermittent starting of rover 25 2 litre diesel

I take it that the diesel filter has been changed and the air filter.

The cheapest solution would be to check the priming pump on the hand primer near the diesel pump. Prime the pump and then try to start it - does this work? These things sometimes leak air.

Another would be to get your compression tested (although that should already have been done.)

I HAVE A 1998 FORD WINDSTAR VAN WITH A 3.8 V6 ENGINE. IT KEEPS RUNNING HOT, AND NOW IT WON'T RUN. YOU CAN SMELL ANTIFREEZE SOMETIMES, AND IT'S LIKE SOMETHING JUST START RUNNING OUT OF THE ENGINE. I WAS...

More likely the head gasket--there is no coolant in the intake manifold. This is a big job. I did one recently and it took almost 2 days to replace both head gaskets.

Losing antifreeze, but I see no leakage on the

If you are loosing radiator water/antifreeze and you see 'white' smoke out of your exhaust then it is likely that you are seeing steam: this usually indicates that you have a blown cylinder head gasket or have a cracked ylinder head: both situation will cause overheating of your engine. You can also check this situation by waiting until the engine is COLD, opening the radiator cap, refill with clean radiator fluid/water, restart the engine and see if the water as seen in the radiator is violently bubbling. Another condition before even starting the car again is if you see oil/white-brown staining in the radiator fluid caused by cracked cylinder head or gaskets letting engine oil in the radiator circuit. In any case, it is a critical sitation and you should get it checked and fixed immediately.
Hope it helps and please let me know if I have assessed the correct situation.

My rover 25 will not start!the battry has power tryed a boost start as well as atow start.discovered that the water/antifreeze resevoir has a 1/4 inch of ice in it does this mean i have seized my engine...

let it thaw out ,then see if you have popped a core plug ,if no leaks then put in 3 litres of pure antifreeze and then try starting .petrol or diesel because if its diesel then the fuel could be frozen as well

No heat loosing antifreeze

Sounds like a blown head gasket for sure (I just repaired mine in '89 Benz)......use a high quality head gasket repair additive (Bars-Leak works great), you can find this at an autoparts store. Follow directions on the bottle EXACTLY as they are written (very important). Also don't forget to change the oil when you are done (it probably has some water/antifreeze in it.
