I entered the wrong name for my unit because the system didn't want to take my question with my unit. I own a Betamax Sony SL-2300. Everything works great except tracking, but I'm not sure if it is the unit or the old tapes. I have tried to play several different tapes and all tapes play with a terrible line of tracking present. I'm willing to buy another unit if I have to, but I'm not sure if the problem is with my Sony unit or the tapes, I'm afraid to incur the expense and getting a good unit that can not play my tapes without lines because the problem is with the tapes, not my unit. My questions: Is there a test that I can do to determine if the tracking mechanism is not working, and if so, is there a way to fix it, I'm very good at simple repairs or adjustments ?
A common problem with this model and others is the tracking pot itself fails. Wiper in pot breaks loose. Test if the tracking control has any effect?? If not, pot is bad.
Other causes are dirty heads and tape path but, the tracking control should always have some effect on PB pic. Bad video head, tape guides loose( tape not tracking on video head correctly), guide pin problem on loading ring, slack brake problem, etc.
