Unless you have hard water it is not necessary to use the dishwasher salts. We are in an area with very soft water, just pretend the red light is not there and wash as usual. Same for drying agent, we don't use it and the machine still works even though the lights are on. We actually had a repair person come out, the company we bought the dishwasher from were willing to give us a new one based on my saying it didn't work without salts. Needless to say I felt like an idiot when he came. The manual that comes with the unit should be better written.... There is a delay between turning the power on and the machine starting which was the biggest reason I thought it was not working without the salts.

Check Walmart and stores like that. If all else fails, you can buy it on Amazon. Look for "Finish Dishwashing Salt." Buy more than one to keep on hand plus you'll save a little money.

I found it on amazon. But you don't necessarily need it. If you have it hooked up to the sink, plugged in, and water turned on. Turn it on hit start and wait and it will start after 20 seconds (complete estimate not actual time). I thought I had to have salt to use it but you don't.

I never use it so can't tell you. Works fine without salt or jet-dry.

SOURCE: My salt light stays on

HI,

You can buy dishwasher salt in almost every supermarket. It can usually be found in the section with other household cleaning products such as soaps and washing powders. Make sure you are buying dishwasher salt. Do not use table salt or any other type of salt not designed for use with dishwashers.

You have not been charged for this information ;)

What is the meaning of the red arrow light on my Defy DDW236 Dishwasher? I filled with salt yesterday and had to refill again today which is also strange so that light is back on too

On other Defy dishwashers, the red arrow indicates End of Cycle. Thus your dishes should be clean and ready to be removed from the dishwasher. See page 14 the manual for the DDW170 here: https://www.newappliances.co.za/uploads/documents/DOWNLOAD%20MANUAL%20DDW170.pdf . On page 6, the manual states that the add salt indicator can glow for an extended period after you add salt. This is due to the time needed to dissolve the water softener salt in 1 liter of water. Do not add more salt than the reservoir can hold (2 Kg for the DDW170).

I hope this helps.

Cindy Wells
(Note: if the salt reservoir was dry, you need to add water before adding the water softener salt.)

What kind of salt do I buy for use in the Danby DW?

Hi there,

Well Dishwasher salt is a particular grade of sodium chloride salt, and is used for recharging the built-in ion-exchange resins of the water softener in dishwashers that have a built-in water softener. The salt particles are larger than the size of table salt particles, and dissolves slowly enough that it will not clog the softener unit. This salt does not have added iodide salts, and it should have minimal amounts of iron and manganese salts. Some dishwasher detergents are marketed as not needing dishwasher salts. These detergents use higher levels of phosphate that increases the solubility of hard water ions. Never use table salt or detergent in the salt compartment of your dishwasher as this will damage your water softener unit. You can purchase the dishwasher salt from the below link -

Good Luck!!

Thanks

Where do I add the salt in the dishwasher

Hi,

Before i provide you with the solution, Read the below one :-

CAN I USE ORDINARY TABLE SALT?
No. Table, cooking, rock and sea salts may contain additives that can actually increase water hardness. Also, the fine consistency of some of these salts mean they are likely to clog when wet. Always use granular dishwasher salt because it is very pure and is the right consistency for use in your machine.
Granular salt is the ONLY type of salt that should be used to regenerate the softener. Be aware that some varieties of ‘dishwasher salt’ use Dead Sea salt. This variety may contain minute insoluble organic matter that may adversely affect the resin within your softener over time. If you are in doubt about the origins of the salt, ask the retailer or manufacturer.

Now, look at the Video :-

http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-load-a-dishwasher-for-the-best-results

The steps also include where you need to add Salt in the Dishwasher. You need to be careful with the amount. On few dishwashers, you would have an indication light. Make sure that it should be appropriate.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!
