SOURCE: Brother Industrial Machine Tension

This is an answer to another person with a similar complaint. Try the suggestion below, it may fix the problem.

From your description it appears that you have tried tension settings on the upper tension control adjustment knob without success.
Check that the bobin tension is adjusted correctly by taking out the bobin complete with the spool.
Pull the cotton thread and it should be a smooth light pressure if the tension is correct. If it is tight to pull or pulls freely then adjust the tension screw which is found on the outside of the bobbin. The screw is very small and requires a minature size screwdriver. The adjustment will only be a slight turn of the screw one way or the other to obtain the correct tension(depending if it was loose or tight).
Once this is set reinstall the bobin and tread up the machine, hopefully with the upper tension set at approx."2" the machine will sew correctly.

SOURCE: Thread Breaking On Brother Sewing Machine

if thread is good quality you may have a sharp groove in your needle plate hole from needle breakage. if so, polish with emery tape.

SOURCE: I get loops on top and/or bottom of fabric during

Top tension back to 4 and leave the bobbin tension as is.

Make sure you have a new needle for the type of fabric being sewn installed with the flat side to the back of the machine. A bent needle can sometimes go unnoticed.

Always thread the machine with the presser foot up and this will give proper tension to the stitch.

Check the manual to be sure you are threading correctly (always with the presser foot up) and that the bobbin thread is feeding in the correct direction from the bobbin spool and through the guides.

Take hold of the thread at the needle as you lower and raise the needle to pull up the bobbin thread. Take both thread ends under the presser foot and to the back of the machine.

SOURCE: how do i set the tension on my brother xl-3010

I don't have this machine, but the tension on the bobbin is usually set by the tiny screw on the bobbin case. insert the bobbin into the case so that the thread unrolls counter clockwise. Make sure that there is no lint in the bobbin area.

What is the setting for gathering

Loosen the top tension until you see little loops on the bottom. Lengthen stitch length. Test first on scrap to get it down... sew a line then gather by pushing and pulling the bobbin thread. (don't pull it out!!)

Another way to do it without a special foot is to zig zag over a cord. :)

Once you have the gathers distributed... re-tighten the top tension and test on scrap again... then stitch your gathers in place.

I cannot get the tension right on my 2600 Brother machine. I am stitching in the ditch with three layers of material. Can you please help?

Make sure you have the right size needle...not to small. Then do a simple seam through three layers (doesn't need to be a seam just sewing through 3 layers of scrap) using a wide zig zag stitch. Examine the stitch looking at both sides. Do they look even, identical?

Think in opposites, ie the bottom thread tension affects the stitch on the top side and the thread tension on top affects the stitch on the bottom side. If one side is loopy then the opposite side tension is too loose (or, sometimes that side's tension is too tight). Adjust until both sides are identical looking. Then try stitching in the ditch like you wanted to.

The needle comes unthreaded when machine is started brother 2600 I

Pull both bottom and top thread to the back of the machine for about 10 cm or 4 inches out before you start stitching. Hold them loosly. Put fabric under the foot (the whole foot, don't start at the raw edge), make sure foot is down (to ensure tension). Start with the needle in the top position.
Your needle is likely to become unthreaded when the needle goes down and back up. But not if you hold the thread (and enough of it). Happy sewing.

I just bought a brother xl2600i. i followed your instructions regarding the settings, but the thread still keeps bunching up on the bottom. i'm at a loss and ready to return it for a different...

I don't know if it was me that helped you last time but the top tensions should be about 4 or 5 and the bottom tension should be set so you can just pull the thread through with slight resistence, if it is too tight slacken the screw on the bobbin case about a quarter of a turn at a time anti clockwise and test sew and adjust until you get it right, make sure the presser foot is up when you thread the machine.

Brother MB 2600

You should not have to adjust the bottom tension when using sewing thread.

There is a tiny screw on the side of the bobbin case - left/loose; right/tight.

Mark the screw head slot and edge of the bobbin case with nail polish or sharpie so you know where you started.

If you are having a stitching problem that appears to be loose bobbin thread, it may be that the machine was threaded with the presser foot down.

Always thread a sewing machine with the presser foot up.

When the presser foot is down when threading, the thread cannot enter the tension control and you get loose, loopy stitching.

I have a brother XL-2600, I have used many sewing machines and never had any problems with getting the tension right, but with this machine, the tension is never right. I have bought the best thread, I...

Sounds like you have tried everything possible, be sure you are using an anti static needle on the delicate fabrics, if that does not work it really does mean fiddling with the tensions until you get it dead right

When the bottom stitches are loopy it is the top tension which is wrong. I suspect that it is not threaded correctly for it to be this bad. If you have a tension dial make sure that the thread is properly between the disk. Try the top tension on 4-that is an "average" normal setting. Gradually turn it up as needed. A good way to test tension is to use 2 contrasting colours-red and white are good. You will see at a glance where the problem lies and how well you are correcting it with adjustments. You should barely see a trace of the top colour coming through. Rethread the machine top and bottom with 2 colours-set dial to no 4 and go from there.
