The drop feed lever will lower the feed dogs below the so they are no longer making contact with the material. This option is used for free hand machine quilting & free hand embroidery. This means you are in control of the stitch length and which direction you are going without actually turning the material. Your hands are what is controling the fabric movement.

Janome 109/110 which hasn't been well looked after!Cleaned, oiled etc and sewing fine now but feed dog lever won't move to drop dogs for FMQ. Any suggestions? Thank you

Most likely the feed dog mechanism was not lubed enough to overcome the old oil that has turned to glue. It is very common for mechanical machines not well maintained over years to have the feed dogs seize. Use liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube (hardware store or bike shop). Get access to the area around the feed dogs (either from underneath if it is a flat-bed machine or via the free arm). Gently wiggle the handwheel and watch where the feed dog mechanism moves. Apply a couple drops every place that metal rubs on metal. Move the feed-dog drop lever and apply a couple drops where metal parts rub there too. Direct hot air from a handheld hairdryer into the internal mechanism, focusing on the feed dogs and the feed dog lever. You may need to alternate the lube and hot air several times until it begins to move freely. Repeat until things move well.

I've used this method on several older machines and it has always worked, although some machines take more work and time than others.

Does this model have a feed dog that can be lowered for free motion quilting?

A set of feed dogs typically resembles two or three short, thin metal bars, crosscut with diagonal teeth, which move back and forth in slots in a sewing machine's needle plate. Their purpose is to pull ("feed") the fabric through themachine, in discrete steps, in-between stitches.

Janome 3050 feed dogs wont come back up

Dropping the Feed Dog
The feed dog can be lowered with the drop-feed lever for sewing on buttons etc.
  • Shift the drop-feed lever to the right to lower the feed dog.
  • Shift the lever to the left to raise the feed dog, it will return to the up position when the machine is started.

NOTE:The feed dog should be in the up position for regular sewing. Turn the handwheel toward you to check if the feed dog comes up after setting the lever in the up position

Feed dogs are not feeding

Either they are clogged with lint, or if you remove the base and find shredded gears (esp Singer)....not good

Feed dogs do not come back up after lowering

Are you talking about the feed dogs or the presser foot. Either way, if you moved a lever to lower them, there is probably a screw that either fell out or has become loose that holds the linkage to the lever.

Dropping Feed dogs on kenmore model 19233

Pull out the removable table and you will see the drop down feed dogs switch lever behind the back of the machine. Move that lever to the left or right to have feed dogs go back to normal sewing mode OR for embroidery mode.
