Either the unit's motor is bad or the mechanical parts are dirty not allowing the unit to change CD's or load them.

Check the Disk opener tray Belt if it is not opening...

You should get out all disks, unplug and open it first, clean off all the dust from inside, better using an vacuum cleaner and a fine little brush. Then, very careful clean the dust from the changer mechanism. Then, you must find where is the laser head. For this, plug it, turn on and observe the moving part. Then unplug it, take a long thin stick with cottonwool, wet it LIGHTLY with some pure alcohol and DELICATELY clean the lense from the moving head. Do this 2-3 times, changing the cottonwool. Finally, clean it with a dry one. That's it!

if it keeps on opening up and wont close then the tray dectection switch is broken.....you need to get a new player.
or ifs its not reading the disc the laser mech is probably stuffed....time for a new one!

This may not work for everyone, but.....
I had the same problem with the Toshiba SD-3205. After unplugging, trying button combos, etc, nothing worked. I could here a slight whine inside the machine, and then again...."MECHA ERROR".
I turned the unit on its side to see if there was a manual tray button on the bottom. Nothing. Then just to try it, I turned the machine off and on again while on its side.
It started up, I heard a clatter, and then the display changed to "INSERT DISC". I placed it the right way up again and pressed "OPEN TRAY" and it worked!
My theroy: There was one DVD in the carousel, and I think last time the tray shut, it got wedged somehow and prevented the carousel from rotating. Turning the machine on its side and pressing "OPEN" is what dislodged the disk.

There is a possiblity that he may have shifted the unit while discs were in it causing the discs to slip off the tray and into the unit. You have to open the unit to check if there are loose discs.
