Mine is Acer AL1716 and doesn't display anything, I have black screen monitor.

Check the video/display settings in your OS.
System Preferences in mac os
Screen resolution in windows.
Use recommended settings.

You need to set the PC resolution to the native resolution of this ACER monitor, which is 1280x1024 @ 60Hz.

I would say that is not receiving a signal from your computer.
Can you swap out monitors to see if another one works?

Most probably, if you see no error messages at all, you have a bad video card (assuming the computer is actually starting up).

When the LCD monitor display flickers and or has a black screen then the fault is usually a faulty inverter or the CCFL lamp. When you look at the screen at a sharp angle and you see a dim image then it is a backlight problem and it is caused by a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp.

The screen probably does work in DOS but the laptop doesn't bother sending it any signal in DOS, it's only when windows starts that windows takes control of the displays and shoots out a signal to the external monitor

I don't know how you would get round this because you can't see your BIOS which you need to go in to and set the primary monitor to external.

You can adjust manually using the OSD (on-screen display) menu of you monitor by pressing menu button. Other monitor OSDs cannot be accessed on single button but some combination of buttons but considering it can be accessed, please look for it. Try also changing the properties at Operating System GUID (graphics user interface display) Control Panel Display or your monitors display monitor application software. Try changing the frequencies and other special features like single screen or wide screen, etc..

i Have the same problem, this screen is used on the spare computer we have in a loft conversion and the room does get rather cold, Warming the screen up with a fan heater for a couple of minutes gets rid of the problem. When the fault occurs the buttons on the front to adjust the picture quality don't work they just turn off the monitor.
