Printer recognizes tray 2 but will not print from tray 2.

When printing we would go into the program to print from tray to and to test if the printer is using tray 2 tray 1 is removed. when the printer starts to process the job it gives the alert that tray 1 needs to be reinserted and it wont finish the job until tray 1 is replaced. I went in to the print server we have here and configured the tray and the paper type and also did the same on the printer and it still doesnt print from tray 2.

SOURCE: Somebody has messed with the settings and now whenever we print we have to press "Select" for each page

The tray 1 is same as manual tray, it opens in front of you.
normally (in windows) you need to configure printer driver from printers => properties => printing preferences.

4200 PRINTER Only wants to print out of tray 1

First you need to verify that tray 2 will print from diagnostics test. Use the arrow keys to scroll down to diagnostics and press arrow key, then use arrows move to paper path test and press arrow again. The default paper path test is tray 2 single copy so just select print paper path test and see what happens. If printer prints from tray 2 then we know tray 2 works and that means you either have a print driver that is forcing printing from tray 1 or your settings on the printer for tray 2 are not correct for what you are printing. Check to make sure the paper size shows correctly and make sure that the switch on the right side of the paper tray towards the back is set for standard and not custom.

The printer recognizes tray 2 but it will not print to tray 2.

The printer will not print from any tray if tray one is pulled out. the paper path from any other tray still goes through tray 1\'s feed path (little slit in the front of the tray). if tray one is not in the printer it will not pull from any other lower tray.

Won't recognize tray 3

If you recently had to printer off of tray 3 there is a possiblity that the connector broke when putting the printer back on. You say not recognized, is that through the printer driver? Print the configuration page for the printer and see is it shows a tray 3, or go to the diagnostics menu on the control panel of the printer and then go to paper path test. Under the "source" see what options it offers. If tray 3 shows here then it is likely just your print driver.

Manual feed isnt working. once tray 1 is open i thought it would automatically know i want to use manual feed.

Not necesarily so, it depends on how you have the printer configured. To test the MP tray, use the arrow keys to get to troubleshooting menu, press check, use arrow keys to get to paper path test, press check, set tray option to tray 1, then print test page. Printer should feed from MP tray. If it does, then the problem is that you do not have the printer set to print from MP tray first or you have the tray options set to exclusive which means that if your print job asks for tray 2 then printer will not print from MP tray unless you specify MP tray in the print options.

My Lexmark T640 does not seem to recognize paper "tray 2". I want to print legal, but it only prints from tray 1. How can I get the printer to recognize and use tray 2 so I can print legal AND letter?

2 things
1st make sure the paper guides are set correctly on the trays for legal make sure it's exactly on legal or it put the tray into universal mode. (To clarfiy the guides in the back which allow you to put legal in the tray.)
2nd Go into menu and then to paper menu and adjust/ confirm the settings for tray 1 and 2. Based on your question tray 1 is letter and tray 2 is legal, so make sure both of the tray size and type are set correct.

Tray output

You should configure TRAY 1 as Legal only.
and Tray 2 as plain letter.

Specially when you specify from what tray/paper type to print.

This can be easily configured from the Printer Properties within the Printers and Faxes section of the Control Panel.

Good luck!
