it is not a convection oven only microwave and there is no preheat. refer to your owners manual.

If totally dead the main fuse could be blown, or you could have an open thermal protector on the cavity or magnetron, or you could have a wiring problem.

I've had an Emerson microwave/grill for about 5 years now and love it!! To use the grill function you just hit "grill/combo" then hit the buttons up above the grill/combo button for however many minutes or seconds you want, then hit "Start" button. make sure your using a metal dish.

why are you cooking rice for 30 minutes in a microwave????? the problem is that a microwave IS NOT A RICE COOKER!!!use a rice cooker or use instant rice and heat the water for 2 1/2 minutes only!! OR BURN DOWN YOUR HOUSE!!

Cover with the lid and turn the heat down to its lowest setting. Leave it alone - once the lid is on, set the timer and go away! If you lift the lid and let the steam out you can slow down the cooking process, and rice should always be cooked as briefly as possible. Give white rice 15 minutes and brown rice 40 and use a timer - overcooking is what spoils rice. The best way to test if it is cooked is simply to bite a grain. Another way is to tilt the pan and, if liquid collects at the edge, it will need a couple more minutes' cooking.

I always recommend that folks put food off-center on the turntable to assure more even heating.

It's a stirring action, so imagine how inefficient it would be to stir just by twirling a spoon in the center of your coffee!

If the turntable or stirrer (if equipped) fails, that will cause hot spots and overheating.

Otherwise, you may have a failing magnetron.

The general rule for cooking rice whether its in a rice cooker or a deep pan is to rinse the rice three times, put the same amount of water in the cooker (1 cup water to 1 cup rice). Turn on the cooker, let the rice cooker complete its cycle. Let the rice sit in the cooker for 10-15 minutes to steam. Serve.
You can vary the amount of water depending upon whether you want drier or moister rice. Enjoy.
