Prior to the zoombrowser update I just did tonight at least the camera window came up and gave me an option of what program to use. Now nothing comes up.
Buy an external SD-Card reader, solves all your problems.
The issue is that Canon does not update their software to support old cameras on new operating systems. You can make it work with the usb cable, but it may be difficult, so if you havent figured it out already, i suggest you stick with buying an external SD-Card reader like the rest of us using digital cameras.
(Pro tip: ALL(almost) Pro photographers use SD-Card readers, and they are cheap!).

I suggest you uninstall the zoombrowser software and reinstall it again. suspect file corruption.

According to Canon, camera communication is supported by Vista, like you have experienced. See:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=SupportDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=215&modelid=11209
The software that ships with the XT does not support Vista. To enable this support, you need to download an update from Canon. Click the following link and select Vista as your O/S from the drop-down box at the top:
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=314&modelid=11209
Note that there are also several updates there that you may want to download and install as well.
I loved my XT until my wife dropped it on vacation a couple months ago.
Hope this helps.

Solve your problem by using a card reader to download your pics to a folder you create on your desktop.
