To put the message in a specific mail box, the caller needs to press *1, *2 or *3 (touch tone phone) before leaving their message. (Of course the answering system has to pick up before the key stroke.) Obviously the number corresponds to the mail box that will get the message.

So if you want to include these directions in your outgoing message, you would need to add something like "To leave a message for John press Star 1, for Sam press Star 2" when you record the ogm.

These 3829's do that often. After about 1 year or so of use, something fails internally, resulting in the symptom you see. Sometimes you get "Er" on the display, or the machine simply won't pick up and answer the call.
Bottom line - this model's not very good. Ditch it.

There should be a greeting,greet,record,or rec button on the front.Press it and hold it down.It will prompt you what to do.
