I have the same problem with our steamer. People complained burning smell before. The amber light is on, but no steam comes out. And the steam adjustment slide can't go to MAX. Only can slide between MIN and MED.
I opened the steamer by removing some screws. Yes, you have to pop out two wheels to locate screws. And there is another screw in the bottom. And you have to remove the power cord retraction pedal and power switch pedal to remove two screws with a spring steel attached on them.
And I had to remove two screws on the power cord coil housing to separate the top cover from the bottom part.
Then I found what the problem is: the slide switch was burnt. I saw the white switch housing and the three wires to the toggle switch are burnt black.
I searched online but couldn't find the slide toggle switch for this model. I bought a heavy duty toggle switch but eventually gave up using it, just because our workers only use the MAX steam setting.
So I cut off the old switch and connected the two of the three wires together to permanently set to MAX.
You have to wrap the other wire with tape too. And use a tie to secure the wires to avoid touching the generator which is really hot enough to melt the wire and tape.
After double checked the wiring and insulation, I put back the power cord coil and screw the two screws.
Then slide down top cover, screw back all the screws. Then plug the steamer to power outlet, it works. Only the MAX steam though. But that's all what we need.
I used my cell phone to take pictures during the process, so that I can remember which screws go where, and note down which part should be where, just in case.
I also use tapes to tape the screws to the screw hole to avoid mixing the different length screws.
Hope this will help somebody. But if you don't feel comfortable doing the wirings, give up. It's not safe and not worth to risk.

Make sure you didn't knock off a wire to the heating element when you had it open. Also put a couple of cups of whitevinnegar in it and leave it for an hour or two. This will dissolve the scale build up. If it doesn't get hot thenthe element is probably burned out. There is a limit switch held against the tank too. It can stop the heating element if it goes bad.

Testimonial: "So I turned it on again and now steam comes out only when it's set on medium. Anything else I should be looking at?! What is the element?"

Ok . Now that the steam is sorta working again the element is not burned out. Next is the thermostat. This device controls how hot the water gets and when to turn the heating element on and off. It is the only cotrol left except the safety switches. Go online and search for parts availability for your steamer. See if you can replace the thermostat and find out if it's economically worth doing so.

SOURCE: Rowenta DA75 - Won't Steam

Using tips from previous commenter, Jason Collins, I thought to check for any blockage in the water flow.
Anyway, if you take out the water "tank" there is a black piece and a white/clear piece that are removable, I removed the white/clear piece and now it works fine! Hope it works for ya'll too.

SOURCE: no steam coming out and water tank not pumping water into generator to make steam

The Rowenta DG-980 Iron/Steam Generator works great from our experience (it is a consumer grade unit with commercial grade technology) and over 90% of the user reviews I have seen are happy with it, unfortunately it is a discontinued model & the newer replacement is not as good. Service seems to be rather thin, as is the case with most corporate entities; I was on the phone for 30 minutes before I was able to locate service center in Concord, CA (I am in SoCal), and is the only one in the state that does repairs on them, and I am going to check them out...stay tuned.

SOURCE: My Rowenta Garment Steamer will not steam up.

Ok. This thing is caused by scaling. If the steam generator runs out of water the sensor thinks the tank is empty and causes the machine to go to standby (basically switch off -- orange light comes on). The solution: Open the machine and clean it.

MAKE SURE THE POWER CABLE IS UNPLUGGED BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO THE FOLLOWING:

1. There are six screws ( phillips - you will need a long screwdriver). Two of them are hidden under the wheels (just pop off the rollers and you will see the screws)

2. Open the steam generator (there are four screws) and be very careful with the 'O' ring -- you damage it and you can say good bye to the machine. Clean it if you see scaling. The amount of scaling present would indicate how hard your water was. This itself may not be cause of the problem but now that you openend the machine, you might as well as clean it for better efficiency.

3. Disconnect the hose to the steam generator (it has two circlips) and clean it. Mine had hard deposit of scales preventing the water reaching the steam generator.

Re assemble it.

Good Luck

SOURCE: on and off petal switch not working

When I took mine apart I noticed the switch had melted near the contacts. This makes me not want to fix it, but instead, look for a better model. Hope this helps.

Rowenta 1500 garmet steamer no longer makes steam

Someone else had this fix and it worked for me: (yay!)
*Remove water tank and collapse the hanger bar.
*Remove two screws at base of hose and work the hose off. It will come out.
*Unplug unit and hold over your kitchen sink with the hose inlet pointing into the sink.
* use your kitchen sink sprayer to forcefully spray water into this hole and it will come back out again releasing the gunk that has been stopping up the unit.
* for good measure, I also used the sink sprayer to flush out the hose.
Put everything back together. And make sure it is dry before you plug it in.
VOILA!!! WORKS GOOD AS NEW. HAPPINESS!
