You can try going into your control panel and look for the speaker icon click in there and you should be able to set your sound settings.

If the sound has worked on this machine after the new hard drive was installed, then all you need to do is a system restore from the start menu, acessories/system tools. You may need to go back a couple of restore point in order to get it back, but this should do the trick. If it hasn't worked since the new hard drive was installed, then ou will need to go to the manufacturer's support site and download the drivers.

More often than not this is because there are multiple instances of the devices in the device manager and therefore until there are only one, they show up as yellow !. The best way to reinstall is to remove ANY mention of the device, then scan for new hardware and install your drivers from there.

SOURCE: dell inspiron 9400 dvd/cd rom not recongized.

I'm a Help Desk Support/PC Tech (and the ONLY one for my company) so I live and breathe all kinds of issues...it's my bread & butter. I recently had a co-worker bring a laptop to me for the same reason...not to say that you're having the same problem but with what information you did provide, it does sound quite the same. The DVD wasn't listed in Device Manager nor My Computer and it wouldn't play any discs. The operating system installed on his laptop was Windows XP but the fix is the same for both XP and Vista.

I finally came to the conclusion that the cause of this problem was due to corrupt registry entries, possibly left by CD burning software. He had installed iTunes for his iPhone and the previous user had also installed a CD burning program. And, there's no telling what else had been done to the system. Sometimes removing an installed CD burning program can cause these corrupt registry entries to interfere with the functionality of your DVD/CD drive. If this is the problem, the fix is as simple as making as checking the registry to see if the entries are there and making as much as a couple of changes in the registry and viola! It works again.

ALWAYS CREATE A FULL BACKUP WHEN MAKING ANY CHANGES TO YOUR SYSTEM. When modifying the registry, you can also create a backup of the registry only and restore it from the backup if any issues occur.

Try this for Vista:

1. Click Start then click All Programs
2. Click Accessories then click Run
3. Type regedit into the text box then click OK
4. In the navigation pane,on the left, locate HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE then click the folder to open it and find the SYSTEM folder. Click the SYSTEM folder then go to the folder named CurrentControlSet and click it. Drill down to the folder named Class then click it. Within the Class folder, you will see several folders named with a series of alphanumeric characters enclosed in {} brackets. Find the one labeled {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and click it.
5. If I'm correct about your problem, in the right pane of the window, you will see UpperFilters (if not, your issue is caused by something else and you can exit the registry). If you do see UpperFilters listed in the right pane then click it.
You may see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove it. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see UpperFilters but do see LowerFilters, you still may have to remove that entry for this fix to be successful.
6. On the Edit menu, click Delete. You can also right-click UpperFilters then click Delete. Confirm the deletion.
7. Now for the LowerFilters, in the right pane, click LowerFilters (again if you DO NOT see this entry nor did you find the UpperFilters entry in the registry, you will need to move onto troubleshoot further).
8. On the Edit menu, click Delete. You can also right-click LowerFilters and click Delete. Confirm the deletion.
9. Now you're finished. Exit the Registry Editor and restart the computer.

After you restart your computer, the first thing that you should do is open My Computer to see if the drive is now listed. If you did find the Upper and LowerFilter entries in your registry and removed them, your drive should appear now.

I am assuming that your drive is still operable and is installed correctly. When I fixed this same issue on my co-workers laptop, the DVD ROM was recognized and working after the reboot. Also, because these registry issues are one of the most likely causes, it doesn't hurt to go into the registry just to see if those entries are there. If they are present, this is most likely the cause and the only solution that I know of.

Try these steps if you haven't already and post the results...

Go into device manager and select the sound card and see if the driver is there. Make sure it says "device is working properly".

Plug a set of headphones into jack. If you get sound then it's the speakers.

My Altec Lansing AVS 300 external computer speakers quit working on my laptop. They work fine on another laptop. Please suggest a solution to get these speakers to work on my computer.

Check if the sound card is correctly setup with drivers.

Do this by going to Control Panel, Device Manager and check on sound cards.

Can you hear sounds from regular laptop speakers??

If not, the problem is in the sound card, which is already integrated on the motherboard.

This makes it harder to fix, unless your laptop is under warranty.

If it is software related to the OS or conflict with other devices, you are more likely to fix it.

Hi.

Check if sound from laptop speaker is working.

If sound from laptop speaker is not working, go to control panel, check first the audio properties, and ensure that the sound is not muted.

On Vista you have to double click on the playback device to get properties.

97846c5.jpg

audio properties can also be explored starting the mixer by clicking the audio icon located near to the clock. In the example below the audio is muted:

In control panel also check if there is an installed audio device going to device manager.

If the audio adapter is not present , or if the audio adapter has a yellow mark on top, then you will need to reinstall the audio adapter drivers. The drivers are available online, on the laptop manufacturer's website.

On HP, Acer and several other brand models there is also a bag that can affect the use of headphones only.

In that case when you plug in the headphones, you get no sound, or the sound is still reproducedd through the laptop speakers.
The trick to fix this bug is restarting the laptop with the headphones plugged in twice, then removing headphones and restarting again.

If all the above does not work there may be an hardware fault, like a broken contact in the audio jack soldering joints.

Regards.

My Gateway laptop says my sound device is working properly, but the sound only works if headphones or speakers are plugged into the jack. how do i fix this?

It sound like your headphone jack is the default sound device. Go to control panel > sounds > look at the devices listed. Click on the speakers that have a device connected to them. You may have two selections for speakers, but one may be tied to a sound device and the other to headphones. Highlight the sound device and click on make this device the default sound device and hit apply.

XP laptop no longer recognizes any USB speakers, and internal speakers dont work. USB speakers do not appear in the audio controls. the only 'device' listed under Sound Playback is SoundMax Digital Audio,...

Nothing wrong with your USB ports. MagicJack has changed your audio and driver settings so it can use the sound system for phone calls. The changes exist whether the Jack device in plugged in or not.
You can confirm the problem by uninstalling MagicJack and reinstalling your sound drivers. Should fix the problem.
You'll probably need to contact the maker of the MagicJack device for a workaround. Might be something specific to your laptop/operating system.

Speakers Not Working

It sounds like the driver for your sound card may be missing. Look in Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager. Under "Sound Video and Game Controllers" is there anything with an X or and !.

If so you'll need to re-install the driver for the sound card. If everything in device manager looks fine - let's check the volume settings found under Control Panel / Sound.

Please let me know if this has been helpful or if you have any further questions. Thank you.

No sound from external speakers with toshiba dynadock

if using XP, go to start control panel , sound and audio devices.Under the audio tab make sure the C Media CM106 sound device is selected under sound playback. Then under the volume tab set the volume somewhere in the middle or at the top if you don;t have active speakers . Then Under Speaker settings advanced, make sure the speaker setup is set to Laptop Stereo speakers. Also make sure the speaker volumes are up on the speaker volume button. click ok. If no result check that the cm106 sound decvice was cemented in as I saw it dissaper when I thought i had slected it. I think the key thing here is the device and the laptop speakers setting.

Connecting SRS-BTM30 bluetooth speakers to my vista laptop

Hi,
This has also been sending me around the bend. I resolved it by disabling the speakers on my laptop. To do this go into control panel, then hardware and sound, then change system sound. Select your speakers and disable them. This allowed me to play music through the speakers. You can also re-enable the laptop speakers after this.

Your Majorgeek seems to have been a Minorgeek. When you purchase external speakers to use with your laptop, you must configure your laptop for them. Since your system appears to have worked before you tried to use external speakers, I doubt that you have a problem with your sound device driver. Still,
go to control panel, and check device manager to see if you have any problems. If you have a problem flagged, let me know. If not, click on Hardware and Sound, then on Sound, and see how your laptop speakers are configured. Majorgeek should have turned off your internal laptop speakers and configured them for your external speakers. If they didn't, that likely explains your problem. Configure them and test the sound there.

If you need to use your laptop speakers (say you take your laptop somewhere without your external speakers) you will need to reconfigure your sound to the laptop speakers whenever you need to use them. Let me know if this solved your problem.
