Have connected a SimpleTech drive to MAC via USB and windows backup files are shown. I would like to recover Pic files out of the backup and place them on my MAC. Is there any easy way to do this?

You might have to restore the backup files from on your Windows machine, then drop/drag photos to a new folder. Windows and Mac's use different filing systems, so Mac's are unable to read the Windows backup file format.

Will i loose pictures & other files if i format my pc

Yes you will lose all files when you format.
If you want to save your files but cannot open Windows on your computer then remove the hard drive from your computer and connect this hard drive into an USB hard drive adapter. Plug this adapter and hard drive into the USB port of a working computer, this computer will see this as an external storage device, you can then open the folders on this drive and copy/backup the various folders and files.
After you have copied/backup your files, you can install the hard drive back into your computer to format and reinstall Windows.

I have tried to do a backup of my HP Probook 4520s for the first time using my new eGO !TB 3.0 Portable harddrive but about a quarter of the way through i get an I/O 0x8078002A error code on the device....

This error usually occurs because the portable drive was formatted using a newer Advanced Format with 4k sectors. The system backup tools in Windows 7 only support the older 512-byte sector format.

If your portable drive came with backup software, switching to that is usually the easiest solution. Other 3rd party backup software may also be compatible with your portable drive- I trust Acronis products, and they offer a free trial so you can see whether it will work for you.

Acronis True Image 2018 Overview

In some cases, it is possible to reformat the portable drive using an older, compatibility format. Note that you would lose any files currently stored on that drive.

More technical details about the newer formats-

Won't back up files. Said 'The backup did not

reformat the removable storage device I assume its a thumb drive. go to my computer right click on drive g and select format on the menu, you have 2 choices to format in fat32 or ntfs of course the thumb drive should be formatted in fat32 so select fat or fat32 and do a quick format. that should fix your issue unless its a physical hardware problem with the drive. make sure you remove anything on your g drive that you can access and move to your computer because once its formatted everything will be deleted. after the format, start your backup again.
hope this helps and thanks for using fixa. please rate your experience and feel free to reply with any questions.

Running Windows 7 Home premium. External drive Verbatim USB 250 Silver is recognized, but, needs to be reformatted. I've tried to format (NTSF) using tool in Disk Management. Format runs forever and...

Hello and thank you for using Fixya's services.

This problem happens quite a bit with Windows Vista. It seems that Windows Vista puts a hidden file in the backup; which locks the device.

Open the external device (Windows 7 is fine). Click on "view hidden folders and files." Delete any hidden files you may have in the external.

Go back to "my computer" and right click on the external hard drive letter. Choose properties and security tab. Make your user-name as a main user (administrator) and disable the read only.

Reboot the computer and see if this works.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hello, I have a new WD Elements 500mg

If you are using Windows Vista then format your external drive with exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table, aka FAT64), or NTFS. And if you are using Windows XP then only solution is to format drive with NTFS file system.
How to do that, just right click on HD from My Computer an click format.
