Hi Pamela, it's Jack at Dyson.
DC59's motor is engineered to make a pulsing noise to signal if something is blocking airflow from passing through the machine. This could mean there's a blockage in the motorised floor tool, wand or bin inlet. Check the pivoting flap inside the bin inlet is not jammed, and can move freely, and you may also want to give the filter a wash.

In normal use, we recommend washing the filter at least once a month using cold water without detergent. Allow at least 24 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it:
