Sony parts suppliers sell replacement ear pads. Part no 2-320-280-01 about US$16 each (not pair). Old ear pads slip off - pull gently to stretch the part that sits in the groove of the headphones until one side slides out. The creative sewer can remanufacture new pads from thin soft leather by following the pattern of the old ones. No cost fix is to scrape off the remaining peeling urethane leaving the soft fabric backing. Headphones will still work but the soft earpads should absorb high frequencies.
If you use a headset frequently, it's important to change the ear
cushion periodically. Ear cushions absorb a lot of sweat, dirt and
makeup and can breed bacteria if not cleaned or replaced as necessary.
This can lead to bacterial ear infections in extreme cases. Repeated and
frequent use can also cause foam ear cushion to deteriorate and break
into pieces over time. portable mp3 player

My guess it's something in the cabling of this device I think it is cheaper to buy a new headset with the same quality. I think that that best solves your problem.
You can download the drivers to make your headset work from: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/DownloadResult.aspx?category=ICE&type=LifeChat&name=JUG-00001&os=Win7_3264&lang=en
