Hi Stephen, Keep in the fore front of your mind that the steering wheel is fitted with an explosive air bag. The center piece of the steering wheel is removed by removing the fixing screws rom behind the steering wheel. Once those have been removed, disconnect the electrical connections by unplugging and place the unit aside. Behind that is the fixing nut holding the steering wheel. Loosen it and then using a puller remove the steering wheel. Behind the steering wheel is a special cassette which contains a special wiring loom which must be realigned correctly if removed or if a new unit is fitted. Failure to align it will result in it being broken or damaged. Reassembly is opposite. Regards John

Testimonial: "Thanks for the help. would you happen to know what wires are for the air bag. there are two plug in connections, one yellow with 2 wires the other black with multiple wires. Also which would be the horn wires. Thanks"

  • Off hand I don't know the identification of those cables, but you would be well advised to discconnect all cables. Th

  • Sorry about that, I'm answering you on my phone and sometimes it goes off half cocked. The cables in the cassette are not repairable, meaning if that if that is the reason for removing the steering wheel, you'll need to get a replacement unit Stephen. Regards John

How do i remove the steering wheel on a 1989 mazda b2200

Hi
  • 1st thing you want to do is position the steering wheel straight, easier when you put one back on. If it's never been removed before you might need the help of a puller
  • 2nd is to disable the horn. Easiest way to do that is by just removing the negative cable from your battery.
  • 3rd is to remove center wheel cover on the three spoke steering wheel you can just simply peel the cover off. On two spoke steering wheels (which is stock), you'll need to remove three or four screws on the back side of the steering wheel. Then pull on the front cover, unplug the horn wire from the connecter, and set the center section aside.
  • 4th is to loosen steering wheel retaining nut. With a 21mm or 13/16ths socket and maybe a breaker bar, you'll want to loosen the retaining nut that is holding the steering wheel on the column. Back it off until it is approximately flush with the end of the bolt. Leaving the nut on the end of the bolt will prevent steering wheel from hitting you in the face when and if you try to use your own strength to pull it off.
  • 5th is pull the steering wheel. Try and give a firm tug on the steering wheel while wiggling it right to left to pull it off the column.
As said above, if the steering wheel has never been removed before, it's probably going to require a gear puller or steering wheel puller. You can acquire one of these at your local auto parts store. Good luck

How do I remove and install steering column? Thanks

This all depends on what year the vehicle is? And wether there is an airbag fitted on the steering wheel front. If there is an airbag fitted on the steering wheel front, then the job is best left to a qualified mechanic, as the airbag sensor will have to be disconnected ( Disabled) and this can be very tricky. If there is no airbag on the front steering wheel cover then you will need a good socket set, remove the front cover of the steering wheel and undo the bolt holding on the wheel to the column, then you will see the rest of the bolts for the column at the rear, remove these also, take pics of the set up of wiring looms and bolts before! And keep all parts in a box for safe keeping.

Horn is stuck on 2004 chevy malibu

There is one wire that attaches diirectly to horn that can be removed to stop horn. There is a fuse in fusebox that may also be removed. There are screws in the backside of steering wheel to remove front of steering wheel cover and inspect horn contact for damage or corrosion. If removing steering cover, use care to disconnect airbag actuator to prevent airbag inflation.

How to take sterring wheel off

remove the housing on the steering column, may need a star bit on some vehicles, remove screws on the back of the steering wheel holding the horn/cover on. (sometimes the front of the steering wheel just snaps on and off depending on the depiction of vehicle) after removing airbag/horn/cover or what have you, then the bolts fastening the wheel to the steering column can be removed
note: always a good idea to disconnect the batt. when working with wiring, especially when it comes to airbags.

96 Audi A4 2.8L how to replace combo head light switch on steering column?

For this repair you will need a 6mm Allen key or socket, long no. 1 phillips screwdriver, 24mm socket with extension and ratchet handle and a T20 Torx driver or socket.

Park the vehicle and make sure the front wheels are straight and the steering wheel centred. Remove the negative battery terminal (make sure you have the radio code first!). Loosen the two 6mm Allen bolts on the back of the steering wheel and CAREFULLY remove the airbag by pulling straight out on the orange connector on the back of the airbag. Always store the airbag, when removed from the vehicle, with the side facing the driver in the UP position, preferably out of the vehicle.

Loosen and remove the 24mm nut in the centre of the steering wheel. Make note of the position of the wheel relative to the steering shaft with a marker or scribe. Do not remove the steering wheel from the shaft as yet. Next remove the two phillips screws from the recess holes in the bottom steering column cover. Loosen the locking handle under the steering column to allow it to drop down and with the handle still loose, remove the Torx bolt from the centre of the lower cover. Next, remove the upper steering column cover and disconnect the two wiring connectors that come from the back of the steering wheel. With those two wires disconnected, remove the steering wheel by pulling it straight off towards you. Place the steering wheel on a bench or other flat surface so the wiring and connectors are not damaged.

Remove the three small phillips head screws from the lower steering column cover that were behind the steering wheel and carefully pull the cover free around the ignition tumbler. You now have access to the turn signal, headlamp and wiper switches. Be careful when removing electrical connectors and be sure to note the position of all screws and other fasteners.

Reinstall in the reverse order and follow procedure for entering radio code and resetting auto down feature on LH and RH front windows.
