Monitor not working on Dell Inspiron laptop. Inspiron 1501 laptop
Monitor not working on Dell Inspiron laptop. I hooked up a External dell flat monitor and this didn't work either. Hard drive is working I swapped it out to similiar 1501and it booted. fine. Is the vidio card bad?
Well I think I may have gotten it. I connected and external monitor. Rebooted 2 or 3 times and the external monitor started to work. I hit the Fn F8 keys multiple times and the monitor on the lap top finally displayed. I rebooted again and both the external and lap top monitors are displaying.
I am running a spyware program now and updating my Norton anti virus and will run that.

Either that or the settings are wrong. Try starting in safe mode....as soon as you turn it on, hit F8 repeatedly...till it beeps*. If you still don't see the screen, power off and on again but this time try F1 or F2 to see if you can see the bios (set up) screens. If you can, be very carefull to follow the directions for getting around there and don't change anything if it is not clear to you what you are changing. Look for video settings. Most versions of bios will give a summary of what a highlighted item does. Look for an obvious problem. If you can see the screen in safe mode then it is not fried and it could be the settings. Right click desktop, click display, go to screensaver tab and then at the bottom, click power settings. See if it is set to never have monitor on or something. Check the advanced tab also and see if the video settings are correct. Not that? Click start, click run, type in dxdiag.exe, enter. Have it run all the tests. If you want to switch on the monitor, please use the switch on button which wiil be displayed as 'U shaped button. Fucntion keys Fn will not switch on the laptop. Please see the instruction manual to switch on the inspiron. THanks
Try reseating the video cable and ensure the cable is chafed where is passes thru the hinge assembly. If no change, then the LCD will likely need replacement
1. Get a VGA cable (male-male) and connect to your TV and your laptop
2. Select your TV's source as PC (check ur TV manual)
3. From your laptop, select video output to external monitor by clicking on the Fn key and the F8 key at the same time

Have you hooked it up to an external monitor? If you can see windows booting up on the external monitor then u may have a bad lcd screen or inverter or video card? Still lots of questions to ask.
If your video output works fine when connected to an external monitor, then the issue is with the LCD display panel. I’m afraid the only way to fix this is have the LCD panel replaced. The ribbon cable that plugs the LCD panel into the motherboard could also be the culprit. Here's a link to the display assembly for 1501: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins1501/en/sm_en/display.htm#wp1022270
