My Sony Bravia KDL-37V4000 displays a kind of colour negative picture, which I gather may be the TCON board. I can get my hands on a 32" TV of the same model (smashed screen) so can use the parts from that, if they are compatible. Will the TCON or any other board from the 32" function as normal in the 37" set?

T'Con board to Sony models will be different, and cannot be interchangeable. You can contact the authorized service center for Sony to buy a genuine T'Con board. There is no need to waste time to replace it with an other one. By doing experiments, you might make the set irrepairable.

With an HDMI cable connected, the cable box determines the picture size. The settings on the cable box must be changed in order for you to get the correct picture size. I have some experience with Motorola cable boxes; usually to access the settings you turn the box OFF and then press the menu or settings button on the box to bring up the display menu. I have a Scientific Atlanta cable box w/ Time Warner. I followed the instructions below for the cable box. Somehow it reset my picture and I can now read the ticker at the bottom of the screen and the different picture sizes seem to work properly. Good Luck.

Most likely this is caused by a defective main board. Changing the main board will fix the issue about 95% of the time.
To be absolutely sure, the voltages need to be checked on the power supply. If they are not the values listed in the service manual, then you should replace the power supply instead (accounts for the other 5% of the time).

That symptom may cause by the main board or t-con board, I suggest you do software up grade first.

it sounds like your back light might be going out. You might be able to fix this by installing a new backlight inverter board.
