Check the hard drive might be defect or loose from the hard drive connector. If the hard drive is detected in BIOS probably the hard drive is out of order
Your hard drive may be faulty, this is why the Windows operating system not found. Go into the BIOS and see if the hard drive is detected, if not reseat the hard drive and boot up again. If the Windows operating system not found then most likely the hard drive is faulty and to get the Notebook working again, replace the hard drive, install Windows on the new hard drive plus the Compaq Presario 1692 device drivers and your programs.
You can download the device drivers from the Compaq/HP WEBsupport/download page. Make sure
you select your model laptop and the Windowsdrivers you require and install them. Click on this link to download thedrivers: - www.compaq.com/country/cpq_support.html
Sorry, but this isn't a good sign. Drive 0 is most likely your main hard drive, and only if you have a second one would you computer ever find anything on Drive 1.
I would check the connections inside from the motherboard to the hard drive, as well as from the power supply to the hard drive. Here's the manual:

Also, if you boot your computer to the Dell copy of Windows, go through the motions of reinstalling Windows and you probably won't be able to detect any drive to install it on.
You'll most likely need to replace the hard drive altogether. Sorry!
Hope this was helpful for you (even though it was bad news)!

When the computer cannot "see" the hard drive, it is usally because of dead hard drive and it would need to be replaced. In this case you would see the "primari hard drive not found" and/or "no bootable device found"
You should have your computer checked by a qualified technician.
Your hard drive may need reseating.
If it still gives error hard disk not found then you have a faulty hard drive.
You need a new hard drive and then install Windows Vista
The laptop can't find a hard disk, eirher the hard drive is faulty or not seated properly.
Take out the hard drive and reseat it again then see if the laptop boots up. If it still can't find the hard drive, listen to the hard drive, is it spinning up, is it making clicking noises? This indicates a faulty drive and needs to be replaced.
You can also test the hard drive by removing the hard drive and attaching it to a USB hard drive adapter and then plug it into a working computer's USB port. If the hard drive is OK then the computer will see it as an external drive and you can view and open the files.
Reseat both the Hard Drive and Optical drive and see if they detect. If they do not, then a HDD failure is most likely. The I8000 is quirky in that if the HDD fails, the Optical drive will not work.
If reseating doesn't resolve, Replace the HDD and the optical drive should work. (Controller is a serial design and neither drive will function if the other fails)
It sounds like the hard drive went bad. Can you see the hard drive in the bios at all? When you try and boot the computer does it say drive not found? Try booting from the vista cd and see if you can start a new installation. If you can do the intallation the drive is ok. If not the hard drive is bad.
