I have a Carrier Weathermaker 8000TS and am having issues with my AC (heat pump). The AC does not turn on. I have had a tech come by to diagnose the problem and he says I need a new control board for the furnace. I see that the control board was flashing a 24 code....which translates to "Secondary voltage fuse is open. Check for: Short Circuit in secondary voltage (24VAC) wiring. Before I shell out the $850+ bones on a new replacement control board, is there any other way to check to see if a short is the real issue?
Turn power off to unit. Open air handler and take a picture of the low voltage (tstat) wires and where they are landed. Remove all thermostat wires from control board. Then replace the 5 amp fuse that is likely on the board. Fuse likely looks like one for a car (blade style). Put a jumper (small piece of wire) from the R terminal to the G terminal and turn power back on to unit. This should bring on the indoor blower. Let me know how that goes!!

On the outside of A/C is a condenser there are little thermostat wires going to turn on the outside unit. If those wires have the insulation cracking and breaking off then the wires touch each other instant short. Might have to take the cover off the electrical area of condenser and inspect the two wire going into the cabinet. Be sure you turn off breaker to outside unit. If the wires are touching you can check real quick if you have a volt ohm meter ohm out the two wire without them being connected to anything. If you get a reading along the way they are touching somewhere. Might be easier to replace the two wire from the furnace connection to the condenser. You can use two wire three or four but use only two of them. And the same color.

The fearute that is running your fan so often is designed to provide even, consistent temperatures throughout your home as opposed to hot spots and cold spots. Some customers find this feature to be an annoyance or a waste of electricity. IF you would like to be able to turn off that blower you can have it wired to a switch which would give you either manual off and on or even a timer.
If you want to do this in a barebones fashion you cojuld just find the circuit breaker that controls it and turn it off when you don't want to use any function of air, heat or cool.
