I have re-engaged the clutch and it still will not pick up the thread. I have also tried a new needle.
Hello Zipporah
please see attached, hope it's helpful for what you are asked about.
best regards
1. Check the bobbin to make sure it is snug and not allowed to rotate a small amount. Also check for tension.
2. To begin with hang two inches from the bobbin.
3. Before you begin replace the needle. Make sure the flat side is where it is suppose to be.
4. While turning your hand wheel towards you hold the thread toward the back of the machine.
5. When the needle is beginning to rise above the throat plate you should feel a pull on the thread. This is the bobbin thread causing a resistance while it is being pulled up.
6. If this doesn't work then put the needle on the left while using a straight stitch. If it doesn't work again try the needle on the right.
7. If none of these work you will need to have your machine timed.

SOURCE: needle won't pick up bobbin thread tried cleaning
Hi,
did you clean the bottom bobbin area thoroughly? Remove the cover plate and bobbin reel, look for debris. Any left over cotton will cause problems, after you clean it spray some wd-40 on all moving parts.
Thanks
Adam
please leave me some feedback
You've got something binding in the bobbin area. Open up the entire bobbin/feed dog area plates so you can really see. Get your magnifying glass out and really examine the area for threads wound around things. DO NOT unscrew anything if you can help it. If you unscrew the wrong thing you can knock it completely out of time. (which may be why couldn't get the bobbin thread up anyway.)
If all this is intimidating to you... take it for repair.
