This is generally associated with a bad backlight or inverter. Some have had success testing for a bad inverter using a multimeter.

If you have one on hand, holding the leads about an inch apart and moving them around about an inch away from the screen (while it is on) will pick up a small magnetic field and give a positive reading on the meter if the inverter still works.

Assuming you don't have a warranty or don't want to send it in, the most effective way to test each part is to swap them for working parts. LCDparts.net is a good resource for diagnosing parts and ordering what you need (should you decide to do it yourself). Fortunately, they offer exchanges if, say, you order an inverter but you needed a new backlight lamp.

you may be able to remove the bios battery or reset the bios manually if you open it up

it shouldnt be a problem doing this just depends on how much stuff is stored on it. you can take a toshiba xp disk and format it. Make sure you back up the information before you do on another computer. Windows XP requires a gig of space for updates. Also make sure you have enough physical memory to do so like 256. There should be no activation process of this but if there is need to find the password for the disk. if you have any problems check my website.

please check the sound card installed on your system, eventhough its OEM card, but mfrs keep changing them from vendor to vendor. Later go the vendor's site and look for drivers or solutions

please give full details of model no. , year of mfg, country of origin/mfrg, and windows vers?

You may use a licence key to install a copy of windows on any pc as long as you own it and have destroyed the last installation.

so as long as you don't have either your win98se or ME product keys used on another installation then you can use whichever you choose to install on the pc you were given.

I will suggest you to bring the your laptop to the vendor where did you bought the laptop or in any other vendor that known store of the computer system. i am sure they can assist you locating the service center of your laptop or maybe they fixed your system.
