There is a safety switch under seat. Its may have came unpugged or switch is bad. you can unplug it and install a jumper wire in the swich's place and see if it still dies when brake is released. try this & let me know what happens thanks, wade

thank you Wade, the problem turned out to be fuel/air mix. i replaced the air filter and adjusted the carb and it is running good. I now have a bigger problem, the crankcase is cracked, I am going to try jb weld and if that doesn't work i will either try to have fixed if not too expensive or simply replace it

Jb weld should work make sure it's clean and dry. You may have to drain oil before applying it to make sure it hardens without any oil in it. Just a helpfully top you might already know.

just a follow up, the jb weld has done the job. I can only hope it holds. But for now it is not leaking oil :)

SOURCE: I have 16 hp Craftsman riding mower with a Kohler engine.

It may think you are in reverse and is killing the motor to keep you from backing up with the blade running. Look for switch that is telling it when you are in reverse, maybe it is stuck with grass or other debris. another possibility is that the blades are jammed and they are stalliing the motor. Mines stalls easily when cold.

SOURCE: Tractor Will Not Move And Dies When Brake Is Released

I would check the wires and clean the connectors and make sure seat switch is working. If that is not working, it's like getting off the seat without holding the brake/clutch pedal down or getting off seat with blades engaged. Both will cause engine to die.

cut the wires running to the switch...try again...if same, stripp back wires, and twist together...wrap in tape or use some sort of connector...it's electric and should be treated as such...try again...still ?? Start finding those switches and repeat the process til it works...theres usually 3 or 4...

Craftsman Lawn Tractor Model 917.271120 died while mowing & will NOT turn over. Was starting & running fine up until then. Where are the fuses located on this model?

Back side of dashboard. See manual.

To start, typical rider mower requires BRAKE ON, PTO OFF, and Transmission NEUTRAL. Some require operator in seat.

Why does engine die when brake released or mower engaged?

The first thing I would check is to make sure the drive belt is not binding somewhere.

Battery drains and won't charge

I would start by having battery tested. If u remove it and take it to auto parts store they will test it for free. It could be that the battery will not hold a charge or your tractors alt. is not putting out a charge

John Deere La175 Battery doesn't charge while mowing. After I mow for an hour or so and turn tractor off, it won't start. When I put the charger on it for a second or two, it turns over and runs....

I had the same problem. My LA 175 mowere deck would not engage and I figured out that the battery was not sending the sufficient 12volts to the mower deck to run the mower. I replaced the battery and that fixed the problem only to reveal the original problem. Within 2 hours of mowing the battery again died. I replaced the voltage regulator and that didnt help. I need suggestions on where to go from here please. Anybody?

WILL NOT START craftman LT1000 YR.2000

most likely the blades are still in the on position, but you have a seat switch, parking brake switch, and the blade switch, also the mow in reverse key switch. if mower dies once you let out the clutch in reverse with blades on and key wrong.

LTX1000 42" 18HP Kohler - Blowing fuse after 2-4 min mowing.

sounds as though you are on the right track
but be sure to check the wiring directly from the electric clutch on the front of the motor back to the switch
a wire could be pinched in the frame and shorting out intermittingly
look around and find those wires and move them around and look for chaffing and tightness
and what you could also do is to unhook the clutch at the connection to it at the front of the motor and engage switch and ride around and see if fuse blows and if not you may have an electric clutch issue
