Video files on MyBook 1TB hard drive lag

I would suspect that either the USB cable or port is the problem. Change the USB port (On the Mac or on the WD MyBook (I don't know if it has more than one USB port) that the cable is connected to and see if that improves the situation, if it still happens change the USB cable. Hope this helps.

try relocating where you connect the usb cable of your mybook, also check your usb drivers, maybe they are not good or obsolete. finally check the power adapter of the mybook maybe it is low output, or having low output so the read is slow,
you can also check if you have viruses in your mybook, could be also that the drive have bad sectors, chkdsk and fdisk would be a good option.

Is it still under warranty?

Possibilities:
* try connecting to a different USB port on your computer
* try connecting to a USB port on a different computer
* try a different USB cable between the computer and the MyBook
* disassemble the casing, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, to see if the files on the disk-drive are intact

If all else fails, search online for "professional data recovery service" -- a company that will repair the MyBook just long enough to copy all your files onto a new disk-drive. Of course, this is _expensive_.

Note that Western Digital has a Customer Loyalty Program -- knowing the serial-number on your disk-drive, you can buy a new MyBook from their web-site, at a good discount.

Try this:
First, open: Start > Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools

You should see on the left hand side the words "open disk cleanup"
Click on that and pick your C drive in the pop up box. It will automatically analyze your drive and another box will pop up. Make sure all boxes are checked and then delete all the files. These are all unnecessary files that clog up your hard drive space.

Next, do a Windows update (programs > Windows Update). Do all the updates and let it complete.

Next, unplug your external drives and restart computer. After everything restarts and is fully loaded, plug in your drive again.

If Windows tries to install a driver, allow it to do so.

Now see if everything works fine. Hopefully it will. If not, do a complete virus scan on computer with a good, updated virus scan program. You might have a virus. Do it on all the drives including the external drives.

You can also defrag your computer drives to reorganize the files and speed up your computer. Do this by going to: Programs > Control Panel
Performance Information and Tools > then click on Advanced Tools on the left side. This will bring another box up. You will see Open Disk Fragmenter. Now click Select Volumes and select all your Drives that you wish to defragment (I suggest all of them). Then click OK. And then click on Defragment Now. This might take several hours so be ready for it when you do it. Restart your computer afterwards.

Using the MyBook would be faster if there is a LOT of data, though.

What OS are you running on the PC?

This is caused if there are any system files on your external drives OR if you have set the bios to be able to boot from usb devices

One or the other is where you need to look.

In order to fix this problem, be sure that the drive is formatted to NTSC. Mine was, however, when I started loading mp3 files to the drive first, it somehow got reformatted to FAT32. I don't know how, but it did. Copy your mkv files FIRST!

Some solutions possible:
(Optional: - First split the video in chunks <2GB to make them more compatible with older filesystems and networking technologies)
A) Copy the file over the network (e.g. using Windows Sharing on the Mac, or using File and Printer Sharing on Vista)
B) Try to do it via the MyBook.  This means the Mac must be able to write something and Vista must be able to read it.  You say you've "set up" the MyBook "for my macbook pro".  How did you format it?  What filesystem?  Mac OS Extended (HFS+) with Journaling?  In general, you need to install something on Vista to read the Mac's filesystem format (HFS+), or on the Mac to write a Windows format (probably best to use NTFS).  Examples of software like that are:    (Win) MacDisk <http://www.macdisk.com>, MacDrive <http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive>    (Mac) MacFUSE with NTFS-3G <http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/>       or Paragon NTFS <http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/>
B2) If you've formatted the MyBook as FAT32, you're lucky.  Just split the movie file in chunks <2GB, copy them to the MyBook, copy them from the MyBook in Vista and join the chunks again.

check for the file system.. from your mac go to disk utilities, file system might be corrupted
