SOURCE: I need to wire up a baldor 3 phase motor 208-230/480 15hp and dont have the wiring diagram to know what wire is what or where to hook it to?

Hi Casey, I'm an electrician and can help you with this problem.

First, a disclaimer. Without the catalog number of the motor you have, or a wiring diagram for it, no one can tell you how to wire this motor with any certainty. With that said...

Nearly all single speed 3 phase motors have 9 leads (numbered 1 thru 9) and can be wired for either "high" or "low" voltage. Most of the time, high is 480 volts and low is 208/240 volts. Given that you posted the amperage as "41-38 / 19", I am 99% confident that 41 amps is at 208 volts, 38 amps is at 240 volts and 19 amps is 480 volts. Further below is the way to wire unless the motor manufacturer or name plate indicates differently. You will need to determine the voltage of the appliance this is going to be installed into. You should be able to find this on a name plate of the appliance - but it may provide a dual voltage spec here, too. If this is the case, you will need to *carefully* measure the voltage with a meter, or find out the voltage of the electric panel that feeds the appliance.

Once you have learned the incoming voltage, you will connect the motor as such when L1, L2 and L3 are the line voltage supply wires and wires 1 thru 9 match the numbers on the nine wires from the motor.

208/240 or "Low" volts:
Motor leads 4, 5 & 6 connected together and wirenut.
Motor leads 1 & 7 to L1 and wirenut.;
Motor leads 2 & 8 to L2 and and wirenut and lastly,
Motor leads 3 & 9 to L3 and wirenut.

480 or "High" volts:
Motor lead 1 to L1 and wirenut,
Motor lead 2 to L2 and wirenut,
Motor lead 3 to L3 and wirenut,
Motor leads 4 to 7 and wirenut,
Motor leads 5 to 8 and wirenut and lastly,
Motor leads 6 to 9 and wirenut.

The motor should be operated briefly or "jogged" to determine the direction the motor turns. If the motor rotation needs to be changed, simply swap any two "L" wires (swap L1 and L2, or L1 and L3, or L2 and L3). Test once more to verify rotation and when correct close the wiring compartment and complete the installation. Swapping the L wires will likely be much quicker and easier to do at the magnetic contactor instead of the the motor's wiring compartment. Either location is acceptable.

You should try to obtain the name plate data for this motor - if at all possible to to make sure of the voltage and wiring method. I hope this helps & good luck!

I just need to know what my sp250 idlearc lincoln mig welder is single phase or three phase, my gurage has three phase running in how do i wire in ,if single phase

Hi:

Your Machine is single phase, and it could be a 208/230V or a 230/460/575V depending on the model. Check what kind of voltage do you have at your garage first, before attempting to do the following:

On a three phase wiring you will have 4 wires with the following colors; green, red, white and black. If you have 208/220/230 volts available at your garage you can connect the green, white and black wires, always green being the ground cable in the middle, black and white don't matter which side you screw them in.

Before attempting to connect a 480V to the machine check machine's plaque information in the front (or back) for real voltage, because this voltage can burn the PC board of you machine. The same color sequence applies to the 480V.

Good luck.

I am looking at a 480v fed chiller. It seems to be wired so they can also drive a 120v pump from the same 480v feed. Is this possible?

From what I found, 480 volt, 3-phase is 480 volts from leg to leg.
It is also 277 volts from each leg to neutral.
One can use a step down transformer to reduce the 480, 3-phase to 208 v, 3-phase and then each leg of the transformed voltage would be 120 volts to neutral. Try to locate the transformer in or near the chiller control cabinet.

I want to know the components required to make 6HP load pump pane

You havent indicated what voltage of phase. Is it single phase or 3 phase. 120V or 480V? Bacically you need some type of fuseable disconnect (breaker or fuses) a motor starter (contactor with overloads) and something to control the starter (either manual starter or coil energized starter controlled remotly. I have 3phase in my shop. I have a new machine that is rated for 208v 3ph. how can I tell what my incoming voltage is?

You will need to take the cover off of the breaker panel. Find the three lugs that the incoming hot wires are hooked to. With three phase you will have three hot lines. Check the voltage between the phases. L1 - L2- L2- L3- and L1 - L3 Also check the voltage from each line to ground. If you havw 120/208 three phase current you will have 208 +or- a few voltage between the phases and 120 or so from each line to ground. If you have 120/240 three phase you will have 240v across the phases and 120 to ground on two legs and 208 to ground on one leg, this is called a "wild" or high leg. You may also have 480v into the shop and you will know that very quickily if you get 480v between phases. No matter if you have another voltage, you can buy a trandformer that can convert whatever you have to 208/120 3 phase for your unit.

Well John Henery I'm new to this type of correspondence, but I'll give it a try!

#1 Disconnect from power & remove the 10 bolts holding the cover.(There should be diagams by each of the 3 jumper sets to be changed.)
#2 Standing at the front look to the rear left ,and you should see 4 studs. (Dotted line=buss jumper)
x----x x----x x x----x x
240V 480V

#3 At the front center down low there will be 4 more studs.

#4 On the right rear there is a vertical board with 10 studs.

As far as your no power problem look at the main power switch. Of the wires that go to the welder, 3 will go to the power board, and 2 to the control board. When you hook the power cord to the house power you need to make sure to use the 2 cord conductors that will also feed the control board.

I do have an operator's manual for a 300SM, contact me at [email protected] ,and I'll get you a copy.

We have an Singer electric heater. It is 480v 3 phase Commercial forced air. I need to know what size breaker need to pull this much power and also I have no instructions for hot ground and nuetral...

You cannot hook this thing up unless you have 480v 3 phase service from the power company which you will not have unless you are some kind of industrial operation. There is no neutral involved in 480 3~ only three hots on different phases and a ground for safety. If you do happen to have this kind of power available you should call a professional to do the work for you. Judging by your understanding of electricity based on the question you asked, you will most assuredly kill yourself in the process of trying to hook this thing up.
