D Link DP301U not working with a Canon MXF series printer

I purchased a D link DP301U USB print server for use with the Canon PIXMA MX 700 series printer I have but found out after a couple of calls to D Link that the printer was not on their compatible printer list. Any ideas for getting this to work with that particular printer? The return period has ended though my local supplier and I really don't want to go out and buy a compatible printer since I recently purchased the Canon. Basically I get an error message when I try to finish the installation of the print server. Thanks for any help towards this.

Dont' worry about what the d-link site says. its because they haven't tested it. i got my dp-301u to work fine with my hp1020 on 2 different workstations with the following steps.

1. install printer locally via usb and test.
2. create a second printer as per the dlink manual creating a port. don't worry about the name as we will delete it.
3. once created go into the properties of the 2nd printer and change the port to something local - anything will do to free up the port.
4. go into the properties of the printer that was created in step 1. and change the port to that of the print server.
5. test print. should work fine.

cheers!!

I got this to work with a HP 1020 which is also not on the list.

install the printer locally and test ie via usb.
install the printer via the print server ie giving it an IP address per the manual.
go into the properties of the usb installation and change the ports over from the usb to the IP.
save and do a test print.

i got it working on serveral machines this way.

Where in my canon mg2120 printer is located the IP address?

Since the Canon MG2120 only has a USB port, it doesn't have an IP address. The specifications are available here: https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/portal/us/home/support/details/printers/support-inkjet-printer/mg-series/pixma-mg2120?tab=technicalspecifications.

If you have a router with a USB port that is working as a print server, check the router administration page (usually 192.168.1.1) for a network map. There should be an option to look up the specifics of the devices, including the IP address. Note: you may need to install software from the router manufacturer to enable this print server function. On my router, I found a link to this software on the router page in the section for setting up the USB devices. When I had a printer connected to the router, I had to connect the printer to each computer via the USB cable in order for the drivers to load. Then the software could identify the printer during the setup when the printer was connected to the router.

If you are trying to use one computer with a USB connection to the MG2120 as the print server, you'll need to enable device sharing. Then let the other computers find that system. The address of the printer will end up similar to a folder of the directly connected computer (print server). Note: I know how to do this with Windows OS machines. I'm not sure if it works with iOS and Android devices.

I hope this helps.

Instead of using a usb cable, I want to print wirelessly from laptop or iPad to my Canon PIXMA MP810 Printer. I have a wireless router with spare ethernet plugs at rear. What are my alternatives ? for...

You could purchase a ethernet print server which will allow you to connect your printer to the router via ethernet cable. I recommend the TPLink TL-PS110U. I use this for one of the printers in my office.

Alternatively, you could purchase the TPLink
TL-WPS510U. This is a wireless print server. It will give you some freedom if you wish to locate your printer to somewhere other than beside your router.

What is the difference between d link DPR 1020 and DP-301u

One of the main difference between this tow printer is the DPR1020 is made to work with all printer including those multi function printers , because this old DP301U was a older version of print server that don't support those new multi function printers features like scanning and fax. So if you have a multi function printer I will advice you to get the DPR1020 so all features of that printer will work behind this print server.

Is a canon Pixma MP160 a wireless printer? I would like to make my printer which I now use a usb cord and make the printer a wireless connection instead, and I cannot find in the manual if it is wireless...

Per the information found here, it is not a wireless printer.
If you purchase a wireless print server (similar to a wireless router), you can connect just about any USB printer to it (which would be practically the same as having a wireless printer).
Some wireless print servers that support USB have a maximum of 2 USB ports and 4 or 5 network ports.
The only problem is the additional effort it takes to configure everything to work properly.
Good Luck!
