How do i turn off automatic updates

You will have to wait for Motorola to release 4.4 KitKat.
Or you can root your phone ut pick a root that constantly updates like cyanogenmod.

Are you talking firmware updates or app updates? You have to go in the play store, settings and unchecked the auto update box. I think the firmware/software updates can only be denied like 5 times before it doesn't ask you and goes ahead with the update. I could very well be wrong on that though.

Have you tried a Master Re-set when the phone is off? Hold the center key and the power button for at least a FULL minute to a minute and a half. You will see the provider's splash screen, but hang tough.

This works best with the device on a flat surface rather than holding it.
