My Hoover runs for a few minutes and shuts off.

It's possible the thermal reset is defective. It shuts the motor off if it gets hot. Remove the bag door and take the bag off, remove both filters and then turn the vacuum on, just leave it sit there with the motor running. This eliminates the bag or filters causing any airflow resistance. If it still shuts off after a few minutes it's likely the thermal reset is bad. Some vacuums have an external thermal reset button which can be replaced if necessary but on your model it is built into the motor and you must replace the motor. If the motor runs fine put the bag and the filter under the bag back in - (make sure the filter is clean and not restricting airflow) put the bag cover on then turn it on again. If it overheats and shuts off then you may have a clog on there somewhere restricting the airflow. If so check the power nozzle area, the hose coming from the power nozzle, the extension hose and wands for clogs or restrictions.

After using the unit for a few minutes it cuts off.

The electric motor inside your Dyson has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated and caught fire). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, next time it is switched on it just trips again.

The primary cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Dont be fooled by Dyson's "lifetime filters". They need to be regularly cleaned and replaced when necessary.

Replacement motors are available on eBay for about £25, however replacing one requires good DIY skills and tools.

Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com and see if you feel you can tackle it yourself. If not, take it to a repair shop or call the Dyson helpline.

Hoover Mach 4 Overheats and shuts down after a few minutes

You have lost air flow due to blockage. Look for blockage in the throat of the machine where dirt enters from the floor. Do this by removing the base plate or opening throat inspection flap if so equipped. Also detach the hose and drop a coin through to see if there is and obstruction in that area.

Stops after a few mins of use

You are experiencing a thermal cut-off - caused by a blockage. The machine turns itself off before it overheats. You will be able to turn it on again after 30 mins to an hour after it has cooled down. Call the Dyson helpline to do a full troubleshoot to find the blockage.

Dies after a few minutes of vacuuming

The thermal cut-off in your machine is activating - this indicates that you have a blockage or a clog in the machine. The machine will turn itself off so that the motor doesn't overheat - the machine will cool off and you'll be able to turn it on after 30 mins to an hour.

Call the Dyson Helpline for a thorough blockage check - they know what they are doing.

Our Hoover U5780-900 stopped working while using the attachment. We let it cool down for about 5 minutes and it fired back up. It appears to shut down when it overheats.
