This can be a symptom of drum bearing wear. A quick check for wear is to see if the inner drum moves up and down relative to the fixed outer drum. It should only move a minute amount. If it moves more than a millimeter or two, it is probably worn bearings. Regarding the bad smell - Make a boil wash (with no clothes and detergents) put in the powder's drawer a cup of bicarbonate of soda. It should clean the machine and remove out the bad smell. Good luck!

If you want to take the time, I just replaced my drum bearings and seal for $62.00. No really any special tools needed. My model showed the bearings were not sold seperately and you had to buy the complete tub half, but when you take it apart, you can knock out the bearings and buy them online or at a bearing house. I have a seal part number also.
If I remember right the bearing part numbers are 6306-2RS and 6307-2RS (1 each) and the seal is a 40mmX80mmX10mm thick. Make sure you get the -2RS bearings because they are sealed. The ones that came out of mine are shielded bearings ( -Z ) and they will not resist moisture if the seal shaft seal fails.
Most AutoZones have seal and bearing drivers you can "borrow". They really help during installation so you don't deform the seal or damage the new bearings.
Any good bearing house should be able to macth on up or if you post back I can give you the exact number. I think most brands of front washer use the same bearings, but you may want to take yours apart before you buy.
Worst case the junk yard doesn't care if it comes in pieces or as one piece. Give it a try.
Not sure you will want to get this involved, but its not really too bad of a job.
SOURCE: Washer is loud, and won't spin or agitate
check the motor bushes, and also check for bearings in drum you can check this by lifting the inner drum up and down if you feel a knocking noise then this will be the bearings have worn.
SOURCE: Hi, our washing machine started making very loud
Loud banging is usually an unbalanced load. whining noise is some times debris trapped in drain pump causing it to squeal like a fan belt on a car. Strings, threads and hoses tend to get wrapped under agitator and cause noise, too.

The load is out of balance. Open the lid and redistribute the contents. When it's empty, grab the basket and give it a slight push sideways. It should move a little but, not free swing. If it doesn't have much resistance, the "snubber" has dried out and should be replaced. It is simply a piece of rubber in a metal bracket, that rests on the tub. When the basket spins, the snubber keeps it from jumping around.
