Connect the unit up to a PC and try deleting some of the unused text-to- speech (TTS) voices. Keep only the ones that you need. Delete any unused photos or MP3's...and also any unused vehicle icons on the unit. When the unit is booting, it loads in all of the vehicle icons allowing you to change the selected vehicle, so this too uses up valuable memory.
As a wild guess, are both of your new memory cards larger than 2GB?
The C653 works with MMC and SD cards. If you new cards are larger than 2GB then they're actually SDHC cards. While they fit into the slot they are electronically incompatible and will not work. You need to use cards 2GB and smaller.
Try putting the new memory card into the camera and format the card. If the camera doesn't accept that it has a memory card turn the camera off remove the battery and then after about ten seconds put the battery back in and turn it on and see if you can format the new card again. You should always format the memory cards in the camera, even though there is a delete for single images leave them on the card and format the card. Always format the card in the camera not the computer. By deleting single images in on the card while in the camera it sets up little partitions and pretty soon the memory card is rendered useless. Formatting in the computer writes a little program to the card which the camera can not read.
