Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Memory Card Locked / write protected error.

Hi due to so many questions asked about this here it is. How to deal with memory card locked/write protected error.

kilgourt.gif

SOLUTION 1 - Unlock the memory card.

There is a Lock switch on the left side of the SD card. Make sure the Lock switch is slid up (unlock position). You will not be able to modify or delete the contents on the memory card if it is locked.

SOLUTION 2 - Toggle the lock switch.

If the lock switch is not on lock:
1. Slide the switch up and down. Repeat this 3 times.
2. Let it stay on the Lock position for 30 seconds.
3. Slide the switch up to unlock the card.
4. Try to transfer files into the device.

For non-SD cards: Format the card

The data on the memory card may be corrupted.

WARNING: Formatting will delete all the files in the device. Backup all your data before formatting.

Memory card write protected, memory card locked, memory card will not read, can't use memory card.

Just got a new memory card and now the camera says memory card error. memory card locked

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

Hi. My Canon Powershot sd400 is telling me there is a " memory card error"...and "Card Locked!". Any idea how to fix this? Heidi

Hi!
You have to unlock your memory card. All memory cards have this small lock mechanism on the side.

Make sure that the slider is on the UNLOCK position. If it's already on the UNLOCK position and you are still getting the same error message, try to set it to LOCK, then set it back to UNLOCK position.

I hope that helps.

Good luck and have a nice day!

Memory card error/card locked

It sounds like your card is locked. You need to unlock it. On one of the sides you should see a piece that can move back and forth. Move it from the position it is now to the other side. This should unlock your card. When locked the files are unaccessible to anyone. This also means that files on the SD card cannot be deleted while the switch is in lock position. When the switch is in up-position, then all files located on the card are accessible to anyone, and that files may be deleted from the card.

Good Luck.
