Are you sure the sour milk smell is coming from *inside* the dishwasher? Do you have kids? Pull out the dishwasher, the fridge and the stove and look for spilled soured milk. When the windows are open, the breeze is blowing the smell.
I have seen this so many times in commercial kitchens during my 50 year career.
That blinking light is trying to tell you that there is something wrong with the dishwasher. You need to fix the problem or else that blinking light will come back. And the number of times it blinks (before it pauses and repeats) will tell you (or a technician) what is wrong. How many times does it blink?
The usual discrepancies with run times is due to water heating time. For example, your dishwasher may be estimating run time + time to heat the water from cold. If your dishwasher is connected to hot water instead of cold, it will skip the majority of the heat cycle and adjust the time accordingly. On the other hand for other people, their dishwasher brands may say "50 minute wash" but this does not take into account heating time, so wash can be anything up to around 70-80 minutes.

Water-heating cycle
Many dishwashers heat the wash and/or rinse water to a higher temperature, as the cycle calls for it. In these cycles, the dishwasher pauses after it has filled with water, waiting for the water to reach the pre-set temperature. What happens next, depends, as follows:
On some units, the pause is timed and the unit continues after the allotted time.
On others, the cycle can't continue until the water reaches the higher temperature. If you have this type of dishwasher and the water isn't being heated (say, because of a problem with the heating element or thermostat), after the unit stops at the heating cycle, it never continues. When you repair the heating-system problem, the "cycle problem" is fixed too.
Timer
Timers don't often fail. But if every other part of the dishwasher seems to be working properly and the timer knob seems to be stuck in one place--doing one function continuously--the timer may be at fault. Dishwasher timers can't be repaired. If yours is defective, replace it.

To avoid the wait, increase the incoming water temperature before turning on the dishwasher. Do that by running the kitchen sink faucet until the water runs hot. Or increase the temperature of the hot water to the entire house at the hot water heater.
Warning! To lessen the risk of scalding, don't set the hot water heater temperature higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

I just had this problem. I found an article that explained it and had the exact picture of my problem. It is http://fixitnow.com/wp/2006/06/09/bosch-dishwasher-takes-forever-to-complete-a-cycle/ . I am watching my the dishwasher just move into the rinse cycle as I type this. My guess is that I just saved either $400 for a repair or $1000 on a new dishwasher. I think it is time for me to make a donation to that article's author.
