Figures on barrel of lens when open ie 1:15.3 etc

Those are the magnification factors so 1:1 means the image on the camera sensor is the same size as the image in real life - often used in macro
On your lens, looking at images on line I think you have 1:8 at one end and 1:38 at the other So if you comapre the size of the image on the sensor, to the size in real life
  • 1:8 - real life will be 8x the size
  • 1:38 - real life wil be 38x the size

Fish photographing

I have had good luck with fish pictures by pressing the front of the lens barrel up against the glass. This blocks out reflections that the glass will cause and it also holds the camera very steady. If it is a small curved glass bowl, make sure that the glass lens does not actually touch the glass. You could scratch the lens. If the fish are in a small container, you will have to use the "macro" feature on your camera so that you can "close focus". If you have to take a photo with the camera lens away from the glass, the camera just may try to focus on the glass instead of the fish behind it. If this occurs, just point the camera at something nearby that is the same distance as the fish; press the shutter button half way down. Then swing the camera back to the fish and press the shutter button the rest of the way down. Never try to take a flash picture of anything behind glass as you will end up with a great shot of your reflected flash. However if you have the camera lens pressed against the glass, you can use flash if necessary.

555 battery life problem/question

Before you conclude that my camera and battery are also misbehaving, I would point out that I have had the camera turned on a lot as I fiddled with focus, zoom, menu settings, more focus and zoom, etc, etc. There there is simply LCD viewing time to look at pictures I have taken, playing with in-camera editing features, more viewing, zooming in and out during review mode, etc, etc. Then there is downloading a few pictures at a time, which probably carries with it some USB overhead each time I connect and disconnect. So, in my opinion, I have not given the camera a fair trial of battery performance yet. Some day, I hope to go out and shoot at least a 256k memory card full of pictures before I have to recharge. Or maybe a few card's worth of photos to get that 400-600 shots per charge.
