SOURCE: Dictaphone Expresswriter 2740 Tape Won't Move

The problem is with the capstan motor. More than likely it has developed a 'flat spot' and won't spin up. The clicking noise you hear is the solenoids trying to pull the heads into place, but because the motor isn't turning, it can't pull the heads into place.

SOURCE: lost manual for dictaphone 2750

For transcribing, you'll need the machine (2750), the power supply, a foot control, and a headset (unless you use the machine's built-in speaker).

For dictating, you'll need the machine (2750), the power supply, and the microphone.

Not sure if you're still having problems with this portable, but the first thing I would check is to make sure that you've put the batteries UNDER the battery clip in the battery compartment. Does the machine just make a 'beeping' noise when it tries to play, rew, or FF?

SOURCE: Dictaphone ExpressWriter system - tape will not rewind, play, ff

Is this a standard-size cassette unit? Is the model number a 2740 or 2750? When you first plug the power in, does the machine make two clicking noises? Does the display show 'CAS' or 'No Cassette'?

How do I 'erase' a tape for a Dictaphone 1710?

I used to use "bulk tape erasers" to do the job in less than a minute for standard cassette of any length, 8 track and even reel-to-reel magnetic recording tape. Otherwise, you'll need to record "silence" over the entire length of tape. That will be time consuming - but will make the next recording clearer as opposed to just recording the dictation over the old recording.

Here's a link to some I found on Google. I'm sure there are plenty of other places to check (like ebay or craigslist) too. Don't forget to demagnetize the recoding head too! There are tools for this that will dramatically improve the sound captured on the tape. Here are a few I found. Finally, physically scrubbing the head with a plain old Q-Tip dipped in denatured alcohol to loosen dirt and grime that collects on the head and anything that comes in contact with the tape itself. You can get that, here.

Doing this along with replacing old tapes (they get stretched out, scratched, and dirty) regularly will keep the audio sounding crisp and clear.

Good luck!

The dictaphone wont rewind or fast forward and makes a bleeping noise

Hi,
Does the tape move when you press rewind or fast forward.
If the tape moves for a few seconds then bleeps it sound like a sensor problem.
If it only bleeps when the rewind and fast forward are pressed and the play is ok it sounds like the actuator motor is faulty, this motor enables the rewind and fast forward.
Hope this helps.

Camera plays in fast forward-like speed

Though I don't know the details of your camera and the tape you are playing, one explanation could be that the tape was recorded in "extended play" EP rather than "standard play" SP. Some VCRs and some cameras are incapable of playing back in EP, a mode where the tape moves at half speed so you can record more on the same tape. The result is that the tape playing back at regular speed appears twice as fast and fast forward will be even faster.

Unfortunately, unless your machine can be manually set to play back in EP (usually it is automatic) the solution is to play it back in a machine that can handle EP.

Dictaphone 3750 transcriber

If it does this with all tapes, there is a small "no-cassette" switch at the back of the cassette compartment. The switch may be broken, dirty or out of adjustment. When you open the cassette door you should be able to see the switch tab. Push it in just a bit to see if the No Tape indicator goes out.

It is not a problem at all! The VW-210 & 260 was designed to utilize a two-step erase procedure to prevent accidential erasing of tapes.
1.) Press & HOLD down the TEL button
2.) Immediately press & HOLD down Rewind button UNTIL erase function starts then quickly release both buttons.
