Depending on hardness of your water you will only need 1 teaspoon of soap in dispenser 1 teaspoon for prewash. Your water temp needs to be 140 or more. Run the hot water at the sink till its hot before starting wash. Dont forget to use jet dry....

SOURCE: Whirlpool Gold Quiet Partner IV issue with soap dispenser

This happened to me as well. I think I solved the problem. It started when I first lowered the top rack. In doing so, the door doesn't open all the way. It also won't open all the way if your cutlery rack is in the front and you've put large utensils like a spatula. Consequently, detergent dried under the latch and it wouldn't firmly catch. For months I put up with it never emptying completely. The other day I took a tooth brush and very hot water and cleaned under the latch. After, I could feel a difference in the way the latch operated (with greater pop on opening). So far its been doing fine. Hope this helps.

My dishwasher is not cleaning the dishes as well as it used to. Are there some simple things I can try before calling a tech?

Use a good quality powder detergent.
Check your incoming water temperature, 120 degrees plus.
Use a rinse aid such as Jet Dry.
Start the DW without soap and no dishes.
Once it starts the wash cycle pour in 1 quart of WHITE vinegar and let it finish the full wash cycle.
Then load up with dishes and powder detergent and run a load.

White residue on dishes

This has become a huge problem and a big misunderstanding on what the white dried residue is on your dishes.....IS it hard water probably not . Due you use liquid or powder soap and fill both soap compartments !!!!ow<br /> <br /> well here is a solution first stop using to much soap!!! <br /> most people only need no more than a tablespoon of soap.... powder or liquid..total... dont forget that powder soap can go bad in those card board boxes in a humid enviorment,,,( under the sink) remove and discard any soap that's clumpy and pour rest in a tupperware dish...<br /> <br /> so here is how to remove white residue off dishes...<br /> <br /> Fill your kitchen sink with hot water no soap and 1 cup of vinegar let dishes soak dont let water cool scour dishes in sink no soap rinse them and air dry all dishes .... some dishes may be ruined due to how long white residue had been on them called etching..... now we need to clean the dishwasher start dishwashere like normal no soap and let run for few seconds when dishwasher starts to fill open door and pour in atleast 2 cups of vinegar close door and let dishwasher run cycle repeat necessary till residue is of wash arms racks door and cabinet walls ... these steps need to be repeated in most cases a few times ...

Tips For Dishwasher for its safety and getting dishes cleanest

A) If your household is small, try gradullay accumulating a full load of dishes and rinsing as you go, instead of stacking dirty dishes in the dishwasher.

B) Cleaners and some elbow grease will always get pots and pans cleaner then the pots and pans cycle on the dishwasher.

C) Good crystal and china should be hand washed and not placed in the dishwasher since the detergents and jostling can damage them quite easily.

D)It can take several hours for dishes to dry when using the no-heat dry option the dishwasher. Try propping the door open to speed the drying process.

Manual for hotpoint how to work it

  • Load the appliance with dirty dishes, placing soiled pots and pans on the lower rack where they will be subjected to the most vigorous cleaning. Glassware and dishwasher-safe plastics should go on the top rack. It is not necessary to rinse dishes before loading them in the Hotpoint appliance, unless the dishes have been sitting for awhile and the food particles have dried.

  • Fill the detergent compartment with your preferred brand of dishwashing detergent, and add glass rinse solution to the rinse reservoir on the inside of the door if your model is equipped with one, then close the door to lock in place.

  • Select the cycle you wish to use and press the button. For pots and pans, use the heavy-duty cycle. Normal wash is fine for dishes and utensils.

  • Save on your energy bill by running the dishwasher only when it is full and by allowing the dishes to air dry instead of using the heat dry function on the appliance.

    • The dishwashers door vents emit steam which can harm small children as these are often at a toddlers eye level. Many units have an option where you can lock the dishwasher preventing a child from opening it and crawling in. It's best to keep small children away from the dishwasher.

Our GE Profile (Quiet Power 6) dishwasher is having trouble cleaning our dishes. The top shelf rarely gets cleaned and the bottom is questionable. It used to work fine. We always use Cascade powder...

The obstruction can be external to the unit. Check the drain at EACH connection working backward from the sink connection all the way to the motor pump outlet hole. Do not forget to dis-assemble the Air-Gap (if installed) and to check the inside of the garbage disposal hole also.

If all of these areas are free of obstructions then there is a good possibility that the pump impeller is either very worn / broken blade or there may be damage in the pump housing itself.

I think that if you look at the external drain lines, holes, and connections you notice a big change in the dishwashers performance.
Noting that you have hard water.... I really don't like promoting products.. but when one works and works well I will pass that information along.
There is a product out there made by FINISH called Jet-Dry and it comes in a mini basket form:

    http://www.viewpoints.com/images/review/2009/134/13/1242326145-55717_full.jpg

or an additive if you have a rinse dispenser:

    http://www.finishdishwashing.com/rinse-and-drying-agents.php

Lastly.... if you need to clean up the dishwasher.. on an empty no dishes cycle add 2 cups of white vinegar when you know the cycle has just started filling NOT draining and let it wash. Then do your dishes after that cycle.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

The washing cycle takes 2 hours to complete

Make sure the sani cycle is not selected, or pots and pans, also with the dry cycle most will take about 2 hours, if your dishes are not that dirty use the short cycle. Be sure your water is at least 130 F. Run hot water at faucet before starting the machine.

If you are you using a liquid soap or packets that will be the main problem. If your unit fills with water circulates the water and drains the water, and also heaters are working then you probally need to change to cascade powder soap. The film on the dishes is soap. The unit has so much build up in it that when it gets to the rinse cycle it is rinsing dishes with soapy water. You need to get 2 medium bowls fill both 2/3 up with white vinager, place one in upper rack and one in lower rack and run unit on longest cycle letting the vinager splash out during wash.do this with no soap and no dishes.Having soft water will allow you to use less soap.
