My microwave turns on, turntable turns, just won't heat. the microwave is 6 years old. Is it wiser to bring in a repairman or just replace? there is a picture of the microwave by the timer window.

My microwave turns on, turntable turns, just won't heat. On the control panel, there is a picture of the microwave with a small line where the viewing area would be and it is flashing. It was not there before. THis microwave is about 6 years old. Will it be too costly to bring in a repairman or should I just invest in a new one?

There are 2 fuses inside the cabinet. One is for the clock and turntable. The other is for the high voltage transformer and the microwave module. If this fuse is blown either the transformer is shorted or the module has failed to cause the fuse to blow. Parts and Labor can get close to the cost of a new one, so get an estimate so you can have information to make your decision

I have the same problem with mine!!! I spent 58 dollars to have a 6 dollar diode replaced. Now 8 months later... same prob. Replaced again myself and working fine again. Just make sure you label the wires while working on it. I didn't and it cost me 2 new fuses! Hope this helps.

Typically, no heating of food, indicates a bad Magnetron (tube) or associated components. The oven can be repaired. Magnetrons are not hard to replace and can be ordered online through MCM electronics www.mcmelectronics .

However, due to the dangers of high-voltage within the unit, I would recommend taking the unit to a repair center.

Look in the manual to see what the warranty says. See if there is any information regarding the magnetron or parts. You may be able to get it repaired for free parts, less labor.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good Luck,

- Jim

SOURCE: Maytag over the Range Microvave MMV5186AAS does not heat.

You have a bad secondary interlock (top door switch) or its mount is bad.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

SOURCE: Microwave not heating, works otherwise but with grinding noise

With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our Web site.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

Also at our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you don't find yours, or if you want to look at it without disassembling the oven, you can download it here.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

NOTE: Since it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (usually 5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (usually 1 year), then your manufacturer will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Some manufacturers will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. If nothing else, you can save about $75 for a home visit by taking it to the shop yourself.

To remove it from the wall, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

Whirlpool customer service is here and you can also enter your model number on that page to download your owner's manual, installation instructions, etc..

Magic chef microwave

Take the tray and the plastic piece the tray sits on out of the microwave. There is a small motor that turns the turntable. It is probably bad. You should be able to replace the motor from the bottom of the microwave. Part number is 3966820200.

Microwave stopped heating

I had the same oven for one and a half years and had the same problem. Had the sears repairman come out and he said the magnetron burned out and needed replacing for $285. It was never under warranty with the warranty that came with oven. I couldn't believe it! We had an independent repairman look at it and he found a design flaw that causes the magnetron to blow. If you replace the matnetron (megnatron?) it will work for awhile, maybe, but then just need to be replaced again. It's cheaper to buy a new microwave. In fact, I got out our old microwave that's over 20 yrs. old and still works--just isn't as fast and as new ovens. Good luck!

Hi I have an Emerson microwave oven MW8998B. The turn table will not rotate while cooking. The smaller bags of popcorn just burn the bag. Does this need a repairman or can I fix it myself. Also, I am able...

Hi, I had the same problem with my Emerson microwave. As I rent out the house, and the turntable stopped working while I was away, my rental agent bought another Emerson microwave. On my return I tried using the new (brown) plastic turntable on the old microwave, and found it worked perfectly. Maybe it would be possible for you to order a replacement turntable part. Hope this helps. Good luck, Rosalind

Microwave turntable won't turn

Most likely the turntable motor itself is bad - not an uncommon problem for that model.

Check with www.martinmicrowave.com (toll free 1-877-894-0035)

unfortunately, the particular motor used in your model is rather expensive - + - $50

Turntable not rotating

I fixed my own GE turntable by replacing the motor. You can purchase the part (#WB26X10135) directly from GE for $34.75 plus tax and shipping ($8.95) or from RepairClinic.com for $24.90 plus shipping ($6.46) and no sales tax except for delivery in Michigan.

The part is easy to install. Just print out this drawing to see where it goes (look for part 43) underneath the unit. Of course, be sure you unplug the oven first!

Hope this helps!
