I have a couple of years old mini fridge by Magic chef. The motor and compressor run, but the unit only cools to about 48 degrees F. I'd like it colder. If the compressor is running but the fridge is not cooling, the gas may have leaked out of the system or the compressor is inefficient. The only way to know for sure is to connect a set of gauges to the system. You will need to call in a Refrigeration Mechanic.

The compressor being hot means it is getting power to it. 2 possible problems. The compressor is locked up internally (too expensive) or the start relay or overload could be bad (approx cost for both parts about $45). You have to decide if you want to risk $50 and still find out you have a bad compressor. Most service techs have a direct test harness to hook up to compressors and make them run without the start relay and overload but not everyone knows how to do it properly.
If the compressor is actually running and there is no refrigeration, I would suggest it has a gas leak and that's why it isn't cooling. Depending on what type of refrigerant is in it, it may not be worth repairing as its only a small bar fridge? Check the rating plate to see if its R12 (Older fridges) or R134A . If the unit is less than 5 years old, it may be operating on R32 or R600 (Butane refrigerant gases) If its only a couple of years old, it may still be under Manufacturer warranty. Most fridges carry a 2 year warranty on everything and up to 5 years parts warranty on what is known as the "Sealed system"
Some times refrigerators make a noise that sounds like a tick. It could be caused from the refrigerant flowing through the lines. This usually happens when the refrigerator first starts up and goes away after a few minutes. the other possibility is a fan motor blade taping the shroud from time to time. The refrigerant issue is not something that can be fixed. The fan blade issue could be fixed by moving the fan blade back or froward on the shaft a slight amount. If you have a 10 cu ft refrigerator it may not have a fan.
My unit is a 3 year old Mitsubishi and it started making the humming noise you described. It is quite high and I finally got up on a ladder to have a look. It is the water pump making the noise in my case. It seemed like it was pumping a little too much water out. I undid a screw and angled the pump slightly and problem solved.

this problem is creating by compressor bec u said that this unit is about 11 year s maybe the wear and tearing of mechanical parts thats cause of vibration and humming sounds, of ref. heat is only normal try to replace new compressor or replace new unit of ref.
First fixed the seal make sure that any leaking out. And then go to the next step by checking to see if the compessor motor come on and stay running for af list 10 minute. check the temperature controls make sure they are at the set temperature.
If you go behind the fridg and take the motor temperature see is very hight you must unpluged the fridg you may have a bad motor.
I got mine in 2005. It stopped working 4 or 5 weeks ago. It made a clicking noise and the compressor was very hot. Compressor is under warranty but appliance repair shop wanted $125 to install it and another $75 to charge it with freon. I saw a posting somewhere else that said it was a relay switch. I ordered one from RepairClinic.com for $24.00 incl. shipping, put it in and it's working now. There's a black plastic housing on the left side of the compressor. Just unscrew that, pop the cover off (that was a little tricky) and plug in the new part. Maybe I'll get another 3 years out of it.
can you tell me the model # on the fridge please? the motor is running continuously because it's trying to cool the fridge. it may be a few things, the defrost thermostat, the fan motor itself or the compressor.
I have a Magic Chef 3.6 cu. ft. Model#mcbr3605 thats 3 years old and has stopped working. When I plug it in you hear it start then you hear a "click" and it turns off. If you leave it plugged in the compressor gets hot. Can this be fixed or is it trash ? Thanks in advance.
