20'' Mongoose BMX - How can i adjust handlebar height?

The bike has a Aheadset stem assembly if that helps.Owner's manual does not talk about height adjustment only angle adjustment. I have loosen everything on the stem and handlebar and can't get it to come up. Whats the deal?

  • cpellegrin Jun 20, 2009

No dice. Unscrewed nut like thing and stood on foot peg and pulled got nothing , hit the bottom of handlebar with rubber mallet still nothing. Don't have any thing to spray on it , but bike is only 1 month old. Pulled and hit hard enough for something to give.About to pull the whole thing completely apart.Looks like the hand brakes are the only thing holding the handlebar to the stem when nut thing is loose.Let me know if you have any ideas. Thanks for the help.

You need to unscrew the circular nut like thing on the stem all the way off and pull up hard on the bars and it should come up, try spraying some lucricant on the stem to loosen it if needed.

Once the nut was loose did you untighten the circular screw bit underneath the nut?

Aheadset headsets and clamp on stems are set to the maximum height from the factory, they can't be raised any higher without buying a new fork with a longer steering tube. Some times there will be a couple of washers under the stem and above the upper bearing of the headset that can be removed so that the stem can be lowered. These types of stems typically have a cap that screws into a "star nut" inside the steering column with a #4 or #5 Allen head socket bolt, this is used to adjust the bearings. Remove this cap and bolt (don't mess with the star nut, it is press fit into place), next loosen the one or two bolts at the back of the stem (typically at the back of the stem but not always). Be careful when removing the stem because there won't be anything holding the fork in the bike frame and it can fall out on the floor if you aren't careful. You will also notice that the fork is real sloppy without the stem in place now.

Is there way I can raise the handlebars on my Mongoose ledge 3.1? is there a way I can raise the handlebars up?

Mongoose full-suspension mountain bikes, like the Ledge 3.1, have a little bit of height adjustment for the handle bars. See the manual at https://www.mongoose.com/pages/product-manuals . The current link to the appropriate manual is https://p.widencdn.net/brqquy/OMMGFS-1_Mongoose_FullSuspension_OM . Start at page 18 (20 of the manual in the browser) and determine the type of stem on your version of the bike. The quill stem version has minimum insertion marks that must be below the top of the headset and not visible. For the threadless stem version of the mountain bike, you adjust where the handlebars clamp onto the steerer tube. However, this is very imited since there should be only 1/8" to 3/16" gap between the top of the handlebar stem and the steerer (stem) tube. The is where the top cap and bolt to replaced on the handlebar stem and thread into the steerer tube.

I hope this helps.

How do I adjust the height of handle bars on a Nishiki pueblo bike

According to the manual:

If your bike has a "threadless" stem (fig. 6) your dealer may be able to change handlebar height by moving height adjustment spacers from below the stem to above the stem, or vice versa. Otherwise, you'll have to get a stem of different length or rise. Consult your dealer. Do not attempt to do this yourself, as it requires special knowledge.

If your bike has a "quill" stem (fig. 7) you can ask your dealer to adjust the handlebar height a bit by adjusting stem height. A quill stem has an etched or stamped mark on its shaft which designates the stem's "Minimum Insertion" or "Maximum Extension". This mark must not be visible above the headset.

Adjust handle bar height ?

looking at some pictures of this model, most appear to be using an "Aheadset" style handlebar stem, there is not any way to raise this type of stem. Your alternative is to go online or to a local bike shop and purchase a new stem that will fit your fork and handlebar that has a higher pitch angle to it, or a compatible adjustable stem that pivots. Expect to pay $25-$50 or more for a new handlebar stem, not including labor to install.

Adjust handlebars

you can't raise the stem on a Aheadset type stem/headset, they are not designed for it from the manufacturer.

We would like to raise the handlebars on a Mongoose Rock River Mountain bike but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it. We have no manual as it was purchased used. Thanks

Maximum height was determined when the bike was built and they sawed off the steerer tube.

There is no way to raise the stem vertically, short of getting a new stem that has a higher rise.

Can the handlebar height be adjusted on the mongoose deceptor bike?

The stem could be flipped over if the rise change would result in a hgiehr handlebar, but it would be minimal. That style of stem requires the steerer tube to be cut at the time of assembly and spacers are usually installed that would allow lowering the bars but not raising them since steerer tube length can't be increased.

Or, get a stem with a steeper rise.

How do you raise the handlebar of a Schwinn Ridge AL 26" bike? I want to add a child carrier and I need to raise the handlebar to make it fit.

The handlebars stem is an Aheadset-style and as such has spacers below it to set its height. Once the steerer tube is cut to fit the combination of stem and spacers there's no going UP, only down. Stems can be replaced with different rises and lengths. Maybe that would help. A Bicycle Shop would have everything you need and the know-how to decide if you can mount the child carrer.

How do you adjust handlebars on mongoose fsg?

There are two ways to adjust handle bars on a bike. It's either by using a hex key at the top of the neck or loosening the octagon nut at the base of the neck near the body.
