Windows XP no longer supported by Microsoft, so you can not get updates, upgrades to that operating system anymore.

I press F8 on my dell dimension 2400 and it does nothing. I upgraded from xp to windows 8 yesterday and have the black screen from hell. It said it needed to restart so I hit ok and now I am screwed

Sounds to me like your old machine running Windows XP is not compatible with Windows 8! How much ram do you have? I am saying in general that Windows 8 has a lot more going on than XP! You might try upgrading your graphics card, that is usually a major issue when upgrading! I hope this helps as I can only guess with the information provided! Neighborsboy! "Be Easy!"

Can I upgrade my CompaqMV720 computer from Windows ME to Windows XP? If so, how?

I would think that you mast likely can do it. You need a Windows XP disk with a legitimate install key (or Microsoft will give you a hassel). When you are ready to upgrade, turn on or restart your computer and press [Delete] to enter the BIOS. Go to the Boot menu and change the boot order so that your CD/DVD drive is first.
Open the drive and put Windows XP disk in. Press the F10 key to save the changes and exit. when the computer restarts, it will provide several start options. Choose the one that will install Windows XP. From there you just follow the prompts.

Wandaur,
Windows update is where you go to get the XP SP2 and if you have enough hard drive space it will update and that is considered a critical update by Microsoft.
